Nope - commercial machines can do 12 apples per minute. Which is 5 seconds per apple.

You know that mechanical apple peelers have been around decades right?

This Atlas-Pacific peeler is also way more efficient.

Lots of funny moments in there, but my Occupational Health & Safety side kept wondering where his gloves and safety glasses (or even full face mask) were. Like if a piece of the blade on the peeler detached while the apple was spinning at 4500 RPM... yikes.

And results in a much prettier peel with a lot less mess, too.

Did you watch the video? This guy is doing them way faster than 5 seconds per apple. The last one was 0.32 seconds. Although not exactly the cleanest peeling method, as kafziel points out!

I should probably come clean and say there is nothing that delights me more than this man's accent ("appluhpeeeeler")

"I think you can call this peeled. It is good enough."

"It is not."

This conversation within a relationship is not foreign to me.

It's cheating if you don't count load in and load out time.

Nope. They claimed to be able to peel an apple very quickly, not process a whole apple quickly.

IANAL, but don't let your jealousy and envy cloud your judgement, buddy.

So, because of the links at the end of that video I learned of the existence of Ice Carousels.

I am pleased.

By that logic I'll stick an M80 in a cored apple and peel it instantly.

Well, first you have to core it, then load it, then wait for it to detonate. No go on that one. Plus I doubt any of the fragments will lack peel.

I'm so happy to see any "how it's made" type videos about food processing. Processing anything really.

I'm also delighted to see cats, accents, danger, and wonder.

Thanks for posting. And for the silly disagreement in the comments.

I expect the right way to do this is with a carefully calibrated blast of some sort of EM radiation, possibly coherent... the idea being that you either want the apple skin to boil and explode and go bye-bye, or you want a thin layer of apple right under the skin to boil and explode, taking the peel with it as it goes bye-bye. If you did this fast enough you might not even damage too much of the apple.

I am glad the awesome folks behind the Hydraulic Press Channel not only keep us safe from the very dangerous animals, they have adorable cats and are not afraid to peel apples at ridiculous speeds.

I put their closing phrase in my last talk and I don't think anybody got it, but sometimes these jokes are just for me.

You would. Not all of us come from a culture with easy access to directed energy weapons.

These guys seem like they'd be great fun to know IRL. "What did you both do today?" Mikko*: "I peeled an apple in 0.32 seconds." Anni*: "And I filmed it! And the cats participated!"

Daww.

Also, thing #38 I like about Metafilter is that the disagreements are really funny. Keep it up everyone.

* Not their real names, which I couldn't find

I adapted a power drill to my Hario Skerton coffee mill by replacing the knurled nut with an M10 hex nut. My results weren't that much different from theirs.

I love these two more and more as they continue to step out from behind the camera. I would basically watch them attempt anything as long as it was narrated in their heavy ESL. This video especially made me think about how much fun they must have together.

I did that too, but it melted some of the plastic on the axle housing when I drove it too fast. Learned the hard way that you can't stick just any old axle in a drill chuck for a speed boost.

Anni is always the best part of these. She stays quiet and in the background most of the time, apparently by preference, but when she leans in to contribute something, it's always pertinent, pithy, and usually with perfect deadpan comedic timing.

At a guess I would say the cats are Bengal cats. The spotty one, anyway; the solid red one may be an Abyssinian.
