As Carnival, Mardi Gras, Paczki Day and related Lenten celebrations wind down, let us bask in Calypso Rose's song, "Leave Me Alone," which is being hailed in Trinidad & Tobago as a feminist anthem for protesting men's aggressive sexual harassment of women Carnival-goers.

As an ecotourist in Trinidad about 10 years ago, I seem to have been the only one in my tour group who could sense the hostility in the air between the English founders and the Indian (not Native American, but from India) immigrants. Trinidad is tiny but it has oil and so a whole program of self-sufficiency, but it also has the rich and poor living cheek by jowl because it's a fucking island. As we were told it's South American in geology, thus the oil, but Caribbean in culture, thus the freewheeling party lifestyle. Which is all fine until the knives come out.

Well, I've never been to Trinidad but this song is awesome; and after yesterday I can tell you we could use more of this kind of thing at carnival in the states. thanks for posting!

Oh yes, the idea of dancing freely, just for the joy of it, without the inevitability of being harassed. What a truly wonderful world it will be when women can do that!
