OK, so I'm at work, but I'm the boss, so nobody can give me any grief if I shed a tear or two.

So to be a comic write these days you need to have some serious research chops.

Blame Xemnu the Titan. And that wasn't really Groot, that was a clone he created, alongside all the other Atlas monsters, to fight the Hulk.

Xemnu later ended up as a teddy bear in the collection of the world biggest (physically and otherwise) collector after he took on the Hulk's cousin Jen.

And that giant alien was in turn a spoof of comics writer and teddy bear collector Len Wein.

It's amazing to go back tot he original appearances of many of the Guardians and see just how successfully they were reinvented by Keith Giffen, Dan Abnett, and Andy Lanning. Star-Lord was a pontificating Claremont space opera hero, Rocket Raccoon was a fairly cookie-cutter protagonist used mostly so Bill Mantlo could make endless animal puns and references to a Beatles song, and Groot was a B-movie monster.

Don't diss the Rocket Raccoon miniseries. That featured some of Mike "Hellboy" Mignola's earliest comics work.

Speaking of credits, would've been nice if those were listed either here or at the "original" Imgur post. This is actually an extract from a larger story from Groot (2015) #6 and features the talents of Jeff Loveness (script), Brian Kesinger (pencils, inks, colours) and Jeff Eckleberry (lettering). Please credit your comics finds before some chancer decides to use them as raw material for their pop art again and makes millions ripping off better artists.

Thanks MartinWisse. I tried to check for a source, didn't find one, so I thought it was original. Should have been more suspicious.

I loved the art on the old Rocket Raccoon mini, but the story was only OK and Rocket's current personality is more fun. I did miss the supporting cast and especially the "Halfworld" origin, which was apparently changed quite a bit by Abnett and Lanning.

Now, the less said about Prince Wayfarer, the better.....

I think Groot works better and is more fun as a character when the audience can't read or hear his thoughts and has to infer his meaning from the responses of people who understand him. (Although this can be pretty bad in the hands of a hack; "What's that LassieGroot? You say Billie is stranded at the bottom of a well?!")

I'm sure it's been linked here before but I need to link, again, to AO3's most kudos'd fic of all time.

(just be warned, this is a very intense read)
