i have no idea what this is, but it fuckin owns

OK! A bit more. From a reddit comment:
Please know that Nyango star is a yuru-chara mascot from Japan representing Aomori prefecture that's part of the Tohoku-region which was devastated by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami in March 11th, 2011. So, anytime Nyango star makes public appearances it is to promote the region and help it recover from the tragedy. It isn't drumming for its personal gain but for its beloved home.
Official Nyango Star site. Twitter. Instagram. Youtube page featuring more videos, including this artful, expressive performance and this absolute rager.

Meet Nyango Star: The Apple Drummer From Aomori.

In the entire history of Metafilter there may never have been a more accurate description of a post than this one.

The interesting thing is that, this being Japan, that's not just a guy in a goofy anime character suit playing the drums. It's a hologram of a robot in a goofy anime character suit playing the drums.

Ferocious drumming to the Anpanman theme song! I'm going to have this stuck in my head the rest of the day (only partly because I'm going to rewatch it a few times now).

This has made me happier than anything I've seen in weeks.

It's good to see him performing again after all that publicity around his drug problem. I know he did that stint in rehab, but apparently he got out, got clean and made his amends. He just earned his one-year chip and he's back in the recording studio. Congratulations, Nyan-Cho!

Pretty sure that's Zack Hill.

It feels really weird to say that I think I recognize those escalators, but is that Shiodome?

Hoo-wee, that Bing translation, though..."X red, intense songs rather than the song here one child-friendly. Playing from that began with anpanman no March... terraced becomes violent 2-Please see. "

I saw this come across my Twitter feed a couple of times but I just kind of went "huh, neat" and scrolled past it without listening to it. When I saw the title of this post I knew exactly what it was going to be before I clicked on it.

It fucking owns, indeed.

I'm gonna call up Marty Walsh and demand that he add one of the cities from Aomori prefecture to Boston's list of sister cities. Mainly because the rock duo of this guy and Keytar Bear would be pretty fucking epic.

The person in that suit must be sweating buckets. The real hero is the person who cleans the mascot costume.

Simple. Clean. Delivers. Very appreciated.

Right at the end it starts hitting itself in the head. I feel like I need to run over and comfort it!

It isn't drumming for its personal gain but for its beloved home.

SEE?!

I'm not sure why, but the fact that that.... THING is totally rocking out to the Anpanman theme just completely, totally made my day.

(Anpanman is a mindfuck of its own. It's HYSTERICAL watching my kids try to explain to my parents. See, Grandma? It's red bean bun man! and he's fighting bacteria man! With his sidekick white-bread man! Plus it's frequently equal parts superhero battles and cooking show. Look, see? Leek man is showing us what we can cook with leeks! Be sure to tune in next time where we will learn how to make udon noodles, and also kick bacteria-man in the head really hard!

This is one of many things that somehow make sense in Japanese, and DOES. NOT. TRANSLATE. Kind of like whatever the hell that cat-apple-drummer-thing is!)

is that Shiodome?

Two drummers enter, one drummer leaves.

This is the actual best, and the Anpanman thing only makes it better.

telepanda, wayyyyy back in...okay, well, it's been at least ten years now, I bought a handmade bag with Shokupanman's face on it, and I still use it constantly and always get compliments. The best part is then attempting to explain exactly what the hell it is.

I just picked up an electronic drum set a couple of weeks ago.

This is exactly what playing it feels like.

Listening to shrill cheerful muzak while blearily exploring a neon white and pink AEON (pronounced "EE-on") mall with cryptic English store names & slogans like "Rope Picnic" or "Cinema Club" or "Oops! Nails" and "Happy Ethnic!" sure takes me back, I tell ya. Oops! Nails was (is?) a totally real and quite fancy-looking nail salon in Morioka's JR station that made me snigger each time I passed it on my commute. I love the mascot and his mad skills, I just wish I could have seen it in person!
