Many of my friends are members of the city council in Tampere and this "debate" was truly a agonising evening to watch. Kudos to the chairwoman Sanna Marin. At times she was the single peg of sanity that kept the whole thing from falling apart.

(that was a just a dumb goof on 2:58, but I subsequently learned myself about Veltto, who is described by wikipedia as "a picturesque spice to the daily routines of the institution")

Google translates the first comment as
Goddamn what juntteja and monkeys these opponents. Deaf people can not hear and the flying squirrels die,, how fucking stupid you are. The shoe from the council and smarter place.

I guess Finnish news story comments aren't any better than American ones.

I'm pretty sure I had more important things to do tonight, but since I found myself researching trams in Finland after seeing this, I might as well link to a project brochure [PDF] and the official announcement, and note that this is one of three current tram projects in Finland according to the Wikipedia (the other two are extensions to Helsinki's existing tramway system, iiuc).

As a deaf person, I appreciate the kind lady's concerns for my well-being, but I am perfectly cool with a tram line being built, notwithstanding the silent mortal danger to myself.

Ok, what am I missing here? Why are dozens of people saying stupid shit about a tram? Is that all this is?

Veltto is, or was, apparently sort of an ethnic nationalist, which kind of sucks the fun out of this rockin' tune he performed in the 70s. His Wikipedia page notes that "he stated that if the Swedish People's Party were to become part of the next cabinet with the True Finns, he would resign from the party and vomit for five days. - Jos perussuomalaiset lähtevät samaan hallitukseen RKP:n kanssa, eroan puolueesta ja oksennan viisi päivää. This is all I could think of when watching this wretched meeting.

I don't get it either. Were the anti-tram neighbors doing some parliamentary move like a filibuster to fight the tram?

'Cause what I see looks pretty normal. Light rail is controversial; and democratic public process does involve long hearings with endless speeches.

I'll just leave this here...

This is kinda fascinating... parliamentary trolling/obfuscation takes many forms but this seems endearingly nutty compared the inflammatory/self righteous identity politics that I assume dominate city level and higher representative bodies. This reminds me more of some Church congregational meetings

Wow, the cringe worthy special snowflake kind of oddball I thought was unique, is, instead, universal. I now have more respect for people who can stomach running for office than I previously did. I'd slap more than a few of those people upside the dead (like Gibbs did to the probie in CSI).

They're politicians, not random neighbours. And as one of them pointed out, they've been debating this since 1907.

Am I the only one who kept expecting to see Christopher Guest in one of the roles?

Anyway, best movie I've seen all year. Hands down. Totally gripping.

He's the representative of the Hipster Party.
