Even though tattoos are frowned upon in South Korea, Seoul-based artist Jiran will design and ink a cheerful tattoo of your pet (more at his Instagram). Rival Sol Tattoo does cute cats.

Tattoos are becoming commonplace in Seoul these days, fyi. There are three guys working in my (non-Itaewon/Hongdae/Hannam) neighborhood with major neck pieces, for instance, and I see folks with full sleeves every day.

Bit of a daily downer when the pet's died?

I don't think it has to be. I have my first dog's pawprint tattooed on my foot, and it's a big source of comfort to me. It's nice to feel like there's even this tiny little bit of her that will physically be with me forever. I'm already pondering what kind of tattoo to get for my current pup - something like what this artist does would be delightful.

Many of them are posthumous, but you could definitely get a tattoo now and leave room for an RIP or something.

Heh, these are great. I'd seen that black and white cat from the Sol Tattoo stuff around before out of context, but I'm really digging the more goofy stylized stuff Jiran's doing too.

It's nice to feel like there's even this tiny little bit of her that will physically be with me forever.

Yeah, exactly. I feel like you go into pet ownership understanding that you're gonna have some long-term emotional debts to pay off. Having a rad tattoo to go with it seems like it'd work well for some folks, though obviously personal preferences differ. I'm working right now on a painting of one of my cats that will last a lot longer than she will and, well, that's having pets for you.

I've gotten so used to the relative disinhibition of tattoo culture in the US that it's good to be reminded that that's not universal; interesting to hear that it's something in a state of transition in SK right now.

Johnny Wallflower: Even though tattoos are frowned upon in South Korea...

In Korea, there are no laws about tattooing, However, tattooing is regarded as an acupuncture and requires medical certification (Wikipedia), which is a major hindrance to opening a legitimate tattoo parlor. /context

hahaha that's even more hilariously grim. "Yeah, I'd like a tattoo of my sweet puppy right here on my arm, but make sure to leave a space for the INEVITABLE TOMBSTONE."

What's with the pot leaves? (I know they're not pot leaves, but...what are they? Palm fronds?)

I know they're not pot leaves

I think they're pot leaves.

Or, as cortex said, pragmatic. I've seen portraits with blank banners, waiting to be filled with the inevitable. If you're densely tattooed, or planning to be, you leave room for stuff.
