I assume the inside is also succulent.

Sure, you could get a cake covered in icing roses, but what if you're more into water-friendly Xeriscaping?

I'm traveling (back) to Arizona for a week. These are perfect.

The careful tinting of the frosting is definitely one of the major keys here. I've seen some other succulent-type frosting decorations, but the cooler-toned blue-green color and the lovely green-brown color gradients (I'm especially looking at this photo) really sell it.

For those that are curious, you can achieve some really pretty (and realistic) color gradients if you paint vertical stripes on the inside of your frosting bag with gel food coloring and then fill the bag with either white or another color of frosting. Gives you results like this.

Those are gorgeous. They also match my preferences in terms of the ratio of frosting to cake, which is 5:1.

As a geeky botanist by profession, I can't help but speculate what exact genus and species each of these succulents is supposed to be.

strelitzia: (botany username, nice!) I see sempervivum, echeveria, mammillaria, a dash of sedum, and a little bit of creative license. Basically any desert body plan that can be made with a frosting tip!

These took my breath away.

Now I want my husband and I to have another wedding ceremony, so I have an excuse for getting one of these cakes.

Gorgeous! Probably so gorgeous you could never actually bring yourself to eat one though.

Wow. These are just lovely. Glad to see that there is no euphorbia in the mix.
