Baking a Pie in Her Honor

Dorothy Mengering, the mother of David Letterman, passed away on Tuesday. Stephen Colbert and many other took to Twitter to express their condolences to the woman the NY Times dubbed her "the sweetest, nicest mother in America" in a 1995 interview. Letterman and his siblings composed their mother's obituary, full of love and appreciation of a well-lived, well-traveled, happy life.

A great woman in her own right but also an inspiration to reserved Midwestern moms who end up playing fake-exacerbated straight woman to her beloved weirdo sons.

(My mother liked her, and my brother and I know why.)

I loved how she always said "Hello David" the same way when he phoned her. I'm so sad for Dave and his family. She was terrific.

She was a very sweet woman. I met her in Lillehammer. Remember Dave sending Mom to the Olympics? That was a trip I'll never forget. I had more than a blast.

Sorry to hear. She was the ultimate non-showbiz type.

My mom and I watching Dave's mom unveil her pies the night before thanksgiving while we prepped the bread for making stuffing is probably the strongest holiday tradition we ever had while I was a kid.

I have a vague memory that earlier in the run of the show, Letterman had an actress playing his mother for some sketches. But when she actually showed up, there was no question that she was the real deal. What an amazing woman.

Oh geez, it's Dave's birthday today. He lost his mom the day before he turned 70. Aw, man.
