"Photographer Alexander Petrosyan has spent years and years discovering and documenting infinite layers of St. Petersburg. His wide collection - not only beautiful, but also grotesque - invites outsiders to step inside the raw and unpredictable streets and experience them without a filter..." 170 remarkable photographs by Alexander Petrosyan, each one like a little story. posted by taz (10 comments total) 28 users marked this as a favorite

(I don't know why the article title says "10+ Honest Pictures Of Russia..." btw; there are 17 pages, with 10 photos per page)

As soon as insane this I knew it was Bored Panda. They will often post "n pictures of x" and then the community will add more.

At any rate, these are gorgeous, thanks for posting it!

I don't know whether I believe these are honest and unfiltered, but by golly they're intriguing.

I'd imagine it's something of a standard format, so the 10+ is just a lazy way of saying many without needing to actually account for the total, while the "Honest" and "You'll never see on postcards" is the usual clickbaity headline to make looking at the pictures seem edgy or something.

That isn't meant as a reflection on the photographer or the post though since a lot of the photos are quite pleasing, some mostly just for the incongruity of the subjects in the photo, others for some nice lighting and clever framing of the image. Some are even better than that, where Petrosyan manages to capture something about the situation that carries past the photo itself.

It gets a lot less interesting after about page 10. There's a lot of dog and cat photos, too many "ha ha fatty" pics, and a number of images that feel largely or partially staged, though not necessarily to disadvantage for being so. And, yes, a large number of them wouldn't be all that out of place as postcards as it really isn't blowing the lid off of the hidden history of Russia or anything.

This was an amazing view. His view, selecting the scenes that pique his interest. The photos are indeed high value, interesting, almost Heironymus Bosch like. What are the trucks with large fine arts paintings?
