I so wish my local library had synths. This is awesome, especially the seed stock! And as someone living with a tiny kitchen, the idea of a lending library stocked with esoteric cooking gear (how often do you need a spring-sided cake tin? But when you do need one...) immediately makes me smack my head for never having even thought of it. Great article, great post.

My local library has a "unique collections" section of their website, which tells you about their art, AV equipment, games and kits collections. You can check out fine art by local artists, all sorts of electronic equipment like digital cameras and DVD players, a whole bunch of toys and games, and book club and storytime kits.

Aw, it does my yinzer heart good to see so many Pittsburgh libraries (and librarians I know as friends) included in this list. May the ghost of Andrew Carnegie be proud as well.

I am hearing a lot lately about local libraries that offer tools.

I am currently 26th in line for one of my library's banjos! I have previously borrowed a ukulele from them, and those three weeks with that dinky little plastic thing were enough to get me to purchase one of my very own. Browsing through the catalogue I noticed a lot of their offerings were for 1/2, 1/4 or 3/4 size instruments (guitars, violins, etc), presumably so they are more accessible for children, which I think is pretty great.

My childhood library lent out art. I never knew anybody who checked it out, but I was always super-curious, since it rotated frequently enough that clearly a bunch of people were doing so! Part of our going-to-the-library ritual was paging slowly through the art collection and seeing what was there and what wasn't.

If I ever live near a library that lends art again, I am totally leaving a hanging space for library art and I'm rotating those MFers monthly.
