And yeah, there's a dog named TARDIS somewhere in New York. Ugh.

Slight derail, not a dog name comment, please forgive me.

Back in my reporter days I used to put in open records requests for every data set our county had. One of them was the dog license database, which of course yielded the fun story of most common dog names and breeds.

This was in the late '90s, before privacy concerns became a thing, and public records started being exempted or shut down. And so the dataset also included the owner's name, address and phone number.

One night in the newsroom we had a breaking story about some malfeasance by the district attorney. We had to reach him for comment, but he had an unlisted number.

Lesson: Even people who try to stay under the radar want dogcatchers to be able to call them when runaway Fido (or Sammy, or Rocky, or Coco...) turns up.

44 named Butter! Huh.

Aww, when I was a teen our neighbor's yellow lab was named Butter! Short for Butterscotch, I believe, but nobody ever called her that. We used to watch her when her people were out - I'd come home from school and she'd be paddling around in our pool.

I was actually more of a cat person before Butter - she was my crazy dog lady gateway dog!
