This is great; the extra detail accuracy on this is extremely satisfying to look at. So many small but important truths revealed.

Slightly frustrating: the PDF is unprintable/secured, but they also appear to not have a version for sale on their store either.

Still, really neat, really neat to look at! Thank you!

I'd love to link to free websites that effortlessly remove said protections but I'm too busy downloading a car.

My reaction upon studying this map: After 40 years, I finally understand the G (formerly GG) Line.

I am reading a book of Greek myths with my kid and we just got to Tantalus, punished forever by fruit on branches that bend just out of his reach and water that recedes from his lips whenever he tries to drink, and we were taking turns thinking of things that are tantalizing. This map underscores for me why the G train is so high on my list of tantalizing things. It crosses all these other lines but doesn't let you get to them. It comes so close to letting you transfer to the 2/3/4/5--twice! And the J. And the L (yes, you can kinda switch). And the N/R by Court Square, which I know it used to reach...

(The G is such a grab-bag of weird spurs and unfinished/truncated lines. My recent dive into playing Mini Metro has probably made my frustration with it more palpable and less realistic. I look at this map, and think, What are you doing dude, just drag the line over to connect at Lorimer, and extend the Shuttle up to Bedford-Nostrand! But the reason the map looks the way it does is because of lots of historical oddities, cutbacks, and the short-term necessities of urban resource management. None of which is as much fun as grousing about it, I guess.)

This reminds me...Can anyone explain why the city wastes money on the 18 st and 28 st stops on the 1 line? They're completely unnecessary and the city save probably a million dollars each per year by closing them.

The city doesn't run the MTA; it is an agency chartered by the state with the New York State governor as its ultimate, ultimate boss. Hence Cuomo's ubiquitous presence at all the Second Avenue Subway openings, although of course he's absent at fare hike meetings and the like. This does in fact make a difference, as the political pressures would be far different if the MTA were in fact a city agency.

It'd also be quite difficult to close these stops, barring anything major like a natural or man-made disaster. It's hard enough to close a bus stop, which are already spaced at an incredibly close 1/8 mile (200 m) apart on average in North America (it's about 2x this distance in Europe and Australia). The minute you propose closing a bus stop, a residents' group or citizens' council appears out of the woodwork and protests the closing, claiming that closing the stop will cause irreparable harm. An example from SF MUNI.

Closing a subway station in dense Manhattan would produce way more pushback, especially since in terms of ridership, the 18 St stop has 8800 riders per weekday; the 23 St stop has 15,450; and the 28 St stop has 15,600. They are #184, #99 and #96 (out of the MTA's count of ~420 stations), so the 28 St stop at least is basically in the top quarter of stations for ridership. Even if it would be reasonable for people to walk to either 14, 23 or 34 St (which it would be for the majority of people), the pushback would be incredible.
