Wow. That is a lot of felt. The level of detail is amazing. I wish I was in NYC!
Alternatively, I can make a purchase here, which is really tempting. It's hard to pick out a favorite though.

Pretty offensive to all the Muppets living in that area.

It's not totally complete without felt loosies, felt malt liquor or a felt crap game in the back. and an ornery felt cat.

This reminds of a time, driving through rural Texas, I was prone to stop at roadside stands. This one old lady had a table on the side with just small blocks of wood, painted white, with the word "Ivory" hand lettered on them in light blue marker pen.

"These are for when guests are coming, you don't want the soap in your washroom to look all used and sloppy. See how nice and neat these are?"

Apparently, according to the reactions of the other vendors, I was her first sale. Two for five.

"I had a couple of girls come in and they’d made a felt checkbook, and they tried to pay me with a felt check for their purchases, and I thought 'Yes! You get it!'"

If she didn't let them pay with a felt check, I am disappointed in her.

If she did, it was definitely heartfelt.

Man, I love me some fake foods. Especially crafted ones. (Even more so when they're miniature.) But even with all that said, I think I'm going to have to buy the felt Today sponge. Yep.

My question is when did she start actually producing all these items? I assume she got the idea in 1932 as that's how long it would take me to make all this stuff out of felt.

The space between "Wait, you mean, like, felt felt?" and "'Felt' is no longer a word my brain recognizes as a word" was amazingly short.

The way it describes how you can assemble a sandwich out of the felted meat makes me think you can feel the felt? Either way, I want to go to there! NYC MeFi Felt Meatup?

mildly anthropomorphic meat

I don't get this part. It just looks like meat. But maybe that's always mildly anthropomorphic?

I don't actually need felt bottles of Campari and Mount Gay to go on the home bar. I don't. Really. (If I keep telling myself this, I might start to believe me.)

And oh my goodness, actual churned Knudsen buttermilk!

Oh man, I have to go dig up the set of play food I made for my kid's mini kitchen. Nothing I made was nearly this detailed, though. But I was pretty proud of the banana that you could peel.

Please. No real bodega sells produce that looks that good.

It's the age of the bodega as art inspiration. Along these lines are Gabriel Orozco's Oxxo store, High Times' "pot bodega" Popaganja, sketches of bodega cats....

I walked by this place last night and did not go in! I assumed it was a regular deli with clever window treatments as you sometimes see when bodega owners are artists or friends with artists. Kicking myself!

I am sad. I went to her website, for I was going to order anthropomorphic veggies, and there were no veg to be had. The rest of the stuff is amazing, but I really wanted the veggies.

Ah, New York, where real bodegas get priced out and artistic facsimilies with nothing of nourishment move in. Late capitalism at its finest!

Bitterness aside, the project is pretty nifty. It's particularly interesting that a British artist's felt bodega seems to have a West Coast tilt: Darigold is based out of Seattle, and NYC definitely doesn't have liquor or It's-Its in its corner stores.

"Among her favorite items in the shop are the sausages and other products in the meat case, all of which have eyes and faces," according to this AP article.

Putting eyes on sausages seems like a truly weird choice and the weak point in the piece. . . but I suppose my vision of the ideal felted bodega probably isn't canon that anyone else should be expected to accept. (To be clear, I'm a big fan of anthropomorphic meat. I just don't get it in this context.)

Oh man, my 4 year old niece lurves fake food. She would just delight in this. Of course, she might be less delighted if she wasn't allowed to take everything off the shelves, tell you that a chicken leg was a piece of cake and that you had to sit on the floor and "eat" it because we are having a picnic.

Ah, New York, where real bodegas get priced out and artistic facsimilies with nothing of nourishment move in. Late capitalism at its finest!

I mean, that's at least in part the point of this installation: "Sparrow says the project arose out of her love for Mom & Pop shops, which are often threatened by bigger chains. "I want the work to make people think about the loss of community spaces when these small corner shops disappear; to remind them how valuable these corner shops really are and the color they bring to our lives.""

Maybe, but I don't know that people wandering into the Standard Hotel to pay $60 for felt Doritos is doing anything to save mom and pop stores.
posted by evidenceofabsence at 3:53 PM on June 7, 2017

I dunno, I pay more to shop at my local deli because I like it and want it to stay. I'd save a ton by going to Stop & Shop instead... like people with money are in fact totally helpful for mom and pop stores? At least in NYC.

I made it and it's SO COOL. Everything is so detailed and cheery, I could have looked forever. No line, but lots of people looking and shopping- I can't imagine how there'll be anything left at the end of June. The artist was there and I was so happy I got a chance to tell her how cool the whole thing was. I was so tempted to buy everything, but the things I really wanted were the huge wall designs and sadly I haven't thousands to spare at the moment. Only thing I bought was a $5 token for the egg machine- got a sushi keychain! My photos here- the second to last one is a shoutout to Mefi.
