Yeah, sure, cellular automata are pretty great, whatever. Wait! Let's knit them on scarves! Yeah. Yeah, that's the--WAIT! I've got it! Let's plaster 'em all over a goddam train station!

This is great! I looked at the first two links, and thought, hey, I need to refresh my memory on cellular automata. Then I was like, oh, yeah, this is from wolfram- like wolfram alpha, which helped me get through my math classes. Then I got to the third link- wait a minute, Steven Wolfram is the cellular automata guy? How exciting for him to find this stuff all over a train station.

I'm loving the panel generator.

Had a dream the other night about the competitive Life games in Brin's... Glory, I think?

*That's* a sport I'd follow.

Neat stuff, but scrolling through that last link made my eyes start to hurt!

Those scarves look gorgeous, but $150 apiece? How much goes to the robot?

With CNC laser cutters coming down in price, and future architectural 3D printers etc, I hope we get to see more really complex / artistic buildings in future. Time was you'd need an artisan to create a mosaic or stucco, now you can just print up some panels. I wonder if someone will share this building's design on thingiverse?

How much goes to the robot?
A lot of it, actually. The estimate was that the machine, shipping, training, etc. came out to about $100K before the cost of materials got factored in.

Our scarves arrived earlier this week, and the pictures don't do them justice. They are amazing, and for the first time in my life I can't wait for autumn.

There was some [possibly predictable] discussion over at HN last week about how it's kind of sad that this was meant to celebrate (local) John Conway, and instead seemingly celebrates Wolfram.

These scarves do not have evolving patterns following discrete update rules or solving computational problems. I am disappointed. I would spend at least $150 on such a scarf.

wolfram rules are also super fun to cross-stitch! I'm working on a large pillow right now, and this is the second phone case I've stitched for myself
