You do not want a fox

This post is basically like the textbook that tells you that when people take LSD they taste sounds and hear colors so you definitely shouldn't do it. SOLD!

That fox is enjoying too much ice cream to be svelte, as are the foxes on the hill behind me.
No ice cream for that mama and her babies.

Foxes have a very strong odor. You can smell Juniper the moment you pull into my drive way. Their urine and feces smell like skunk mixed with ammonia.

OK. That immediately got me over my cuteness overload. I'll stick with the videos.

On whether foxes make good house pets: Juniper likes to dig at the mattress and in the carpet. Once we found a whole filet of fish buried under our carpet.

Egads.

This reminds me of the (rather awful) British joke about the townsman and the old crofter who shares his tiny cabin with a pet fox:

Townsman: "But what about the smell?"

Crofter: "Oh, 'e soon got used to that!"

My dog watched that first link four times in a row, tilting her head this way and that, trying to crawl into my laptop to find the source of the weird sounds. It was double the joy for me.

Time for me to remind everyone about the Domesticated Russian Red Fox.

Man, foxes are awesome.

My cats are prone to promptly destroying socks left unchaperoned, and have also done a number on my furniture downstairs, but Juniper's digging talents are...certainly something else.

It continues to surprise me that no one in the US has repeated the Russian experiment and commercialized it. I love dogs but I'm not thrilled that it was something that humans partially/mostly did it to wolves. I'm even less okay with modern people doing it to a new species so I'm glad they haven't.

That fox is super cute though. Are we sure there isn't an ethical way to develop a species of foxes that make good, happy, healthy, pets?

Ooh, very cute. I've been following foxalbiazul's channel on youtube with his pet fox Asriel (and the late RonRon), which I also highly recommend if you want more cute tame (if not entirely domesticated) fox videos.

Juniper is getting a baby brother!!!!!

Update: my cat is now deeply offended that I am looking at foxes on the internet instead of playing with her

That doesn't seem to be the case, actually.

That's interesting and it makes sense.

That said, there is little left of the creature that first evolved to live with humans.

Spitz type breeds like our own Bailey, an Akita, Huskies, Malamutes, shibas, a bunch of Spitzes, etc. are supposed to be some of the oldest breeds and are thought to be closer to that original wolf-dog so even if you accept that they're just the evolved version most other breeds are the result of direct human intervention. It continues to this day often to the detriment of the health of the dogs.

It's just part of what makes me feel like we need to do right by dogs, all dogs everywhere always and forever. We made them the way they are so we owe it to them to take care of them. They live much shorter lives than we do so, other than children, we don't appear to age much from their perspective. We can do some serious magic in that we can open doors and summon food to our door while they have trouble catching rabbits. We're literally their gods and it's within our power to be loving gods for them so we should be.

That's a very touching sentiment, VTX, and I couldn't agree more.

I recall my late Stepdad, who had earned Purple Hearts as a combat infantryman in two separate wars, explaining his pampering of his dogs by saying:

"I may not have much power in this old world, but I can make their lives as happy and comfortable and full of love as possible. Treat them with tenderness and affection. Provide for them and keep them safe. Never raise my hand against them or utter an unkind word to them, and otherwise shield them from any hint of cruelty. At least I can do that much."

VTX & Darkstar, you guys have seen that text about "humans are elves to dogs" that I think originated on Tumblr, right?

Here's a screencap. It's great. There are a couple grafs written as though by dogs about their apparently ageless human friends. It's lovely.
