wow, so what... mkyjce didnt see the other link, big deal. stop pointing these things out. those who dont scroll will be happy about this. stop pointing things like this out (again). anyone who does this is just an idiot in my opinion. i got more important things to think about than double posts, and i bet there are people who do a search to see if a post has been done before...
it would be better to check for the url submitted and to say "sorry this link was already posted", may take some more time, but it would stop double post dorks looking for these things. there. thats it.

hey! is it a double post if the second posting is cooler?

semper; it's not exactly a "so what" -- double posts use up server space and front page space (which makes the front page confusing and hard to follow). And it isn't difficult to scroll down, or run a quick google/MeFi search to verify that your subject was recently posted. More to the point, c3o's point-out was restrained and simple, didn't rebuke monkeyjuice in any way -- just pointed out for those interested in discussing this that there's already another conversation in progress on the topic that maybe they'd like to join...because this one's likely to get deleted anyway.

Anyway, monkeyjuice didn't seem bothered -- we've all done this, and the notation wasn't in any way an attack. So I don't see why anyone else should worry over it.

Eh, semper... I agree that pointing out double posts where the original one is several months old is pretty pointless except for reference purposes - but if a topic has been discussed already just a few hours earlier, it's better to continue the discussion there than start a new one, isn't it?

double posts use up server space: like what! i really dont think this is the main concern here. all im saying is so what if someone makes a double post. mostly the reason people point it out is because they can, not to remind them. what good is reminding someone of this anyway? i wasnt atacking anyone, and i'm not saying you said i was. i was just making a point about people who *always* do this double post thing. now im done.

semper, doubleposts like this are a sign of carelessness or, in some cases, disrespect, as far as I'm concerned.

The poster didn't care enough to even read the rest of the front page to see if somebody's already started a thread on the topic, and there is nothing wrong with someone pointing it out when it happens.

And... "Those who don't scroll will be happy about this"? Huh? Is there some contingent of readers who have taken a vow of no-scrolling?

mostly the reason people point it out is because they can, not to remind them.

How do you know what their reasons are? And who are these people "who *always* do this double post thing"?

you know who you are. i know this because i know it. no reason and stop going on about it, i am the only one allowed to make comments on this subject. ok. the end.

you guys are arguing and raising your blood pressure over a website.

these are sad times indeed.

Waste of server space? HAH!

I'd wager a guess and say that the amount of "you double posted" material on MeFi far exceeds the amount of double posts.

I agree that server space isn't really all that valid a reason.

But -- wouldn't it be better if, instead of having conversation about the same subject spread across two or three threads, we had it all in one place? And wouldn't it be better if people posting threads were courteous enough to check and see whether someone else has already done so?

If nobody pointed out double posts when they happen, then people would get the idea that they're fine and dandy, and we'd see more of them. I also don't think the ones doing the pointing out need to be rude about it -- and c3o was not rude about it. So what's the fuss?

This discussion probably belongs in MeTa, except that it'd be a double (triple quadruple whatever) post there as well.
