I know it's a mug's game to whine about who got short changed.

But I'm telling you these people didn't even *watch*
The Leftovers or there's just no way Carrie Coon isn't on there.

Carrie Coon is on there for Fargo, though.

"But I'm telling you these people didn't even *watch*"

Well I mean it's the Emmys, of course they didn't.

MARTHA & SNOOP! I am so glad they got a nod, their show is amazing.

Glad to see Steven Universe's "Mr. Greg" there under Short Form Animated Progam. I'll be deeply disappointed if it doesn't win.

Poignant - Carrie Fisher for her last TV appearance on Catastrophe.

This Is Us repping for team "we can't NOT have a network show nominated for best drama"

On one hand, The Good Place and its cast were robbed.

On the other, the Emmys, like most awards, have never been about the best being honored and are mostly just another layer of showbiz glitz.

On the related hand, Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon being nominated against one another for their roles in FEUD: Bette and Joan is meta-Holywood deliciousness that I'm just the perfect target for.

Ann Dowd was nominated for both The Leftovers and Handmaid's Tale! This pleases me.

Why is Fargo under Limited Series instead of Drama when it had 10 episodes and Stranger Things only had 8? Does the show pick which category to be considered under?

Totally deserved and hurray for Jonathan Banks and Bob Odenkirk but holy shit Michael McKean should be in there.

And geez Rhea Seehorn FFS DAMN HIT POST TOO SOON

Michael McKean should be in there.

Yes! Chucks's one of the most unsettling characters on tv, and McKean's ability to be warm and menacing at the same time is perhaps even more unsettling.

Barb!

I have no idea if she has a chance but this makes me so happy.

Michael McKean can still be nominated next year.

And no Jean-Claude Van Johnson?! Pish.

Yay for Billy On The Street.

Also Stranger Things, Westworld, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt!

I have a lot of feelings, especially about Better Call Saul's omissions, but as long as Louie Anderson is nominated for playing Christine Baskets on Baskets, I'm happy. Easy prediction: Louie wins. Again.

Why is Fargo under Limited Series

I guess it's because of it being an anthology series, and the storyline and characters in it do not continue past one season. So a season can be taken as self-contained. Perhaps.

I love how almost every outstanding comedy is work created by and featuring people of color and/or women!

Carrie Coon should have been nominated for "The Leftovers," while Mary Elizabeth Winstead should have be nominated for "Fargo." The Emmys must be produced in a parallel universe of the sort discussed in the former, and which the latter often seems to take part in.

McKean wuz wobbed.

Oh, a handful of episodes in each of the last few seasons of Jonathan Nolan-associated "Person of Interest," but not most of the first season, had more interesting material than the Nolan-associated "Westworld" has had yet. PoI (which also had out-of-control AI systems and a dramatic use of Radiohead's "Exit Music" and such) only ever won a nomination for sound mixing, however. It's all about who and/or how many watched, apparently. (I suspect "Westworld" will find firmer footing in Season 2, though. We'll see.)

Color me bummed about Leftovers all around. That was a good final season. I knew no one was really watching it; I didn't know that extended all the way to Emmy voters. Good on HBO for giving Perotta and Lindelof room for the full arc though.

Rupert Friend wuz robbed too. His portrayal of Peter Quinn on this past season of Homeland was heartbreaking.

Big argument at work today between two camps: one camp saying Barb only had four lines, one camp saying it's what Barb did and not what she said.

I'm sure Shannon Purser is just happy to be nominated.

how about those two nominations for San Junipero? (Outstanding Writing and Outstanding TV Movie)

no really, a lot of these shows sound amazing and I wish I was watching them and rooting for my favorites!

At this point, I really don't get what the hell does Kerry Bishé needs to do on Halt and Catch Fire to get a nomination.

Whatever your opinion on the quality of the fourth (and final?) season of Sherlock (or of the members of the cast or the creative team), no fucking way is Cumberbatch nominated and Freeman not nominated for this season. First of all, the two of them were working so far above the material as to be practically levitating, and second of all, Freeman's fucking performance in "The Final Problem." I don't know how he conveys both near-tangible fury and wrenching grief simultaneously.

Nothing for Brockmire? And only the stunt coordinator for Luke Cage. Harsh. And I guess there must be some technical reason that Midnight Diner is ineligible, even though it appeared on Netflix during their eligibility period... Otherwise, I am sad that it didn't get nominated for anything. That show is truly unique and so satisfying.

I've not really paid much attention to the Emmy's before, and some of the categories seem .. overly specific ? But I would dearly like Sense8 to win the "Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series (One Hour) - 2017" category.

I have no idea why Sense8 isn't nominated for any of the editing categories though. The logistics of how that was filmed and how seamless it all looked are mind boggling.

In the more obscure categories, I'm pleased to see Victoria nominated in Original Dramatic Score for a Series and Original Main Title Theme Music.

It is a goddamn criminal crime that Legion didn't get one single nomination. Not even for cinematography? Not even for Aubrey Plaza? RAGE

Moss for A Handmaid's Tale
Odenkirk for Better Call Saul
Coon for Fargo

The rest I'm not so sure about.

Russell and Rhys deserve it for the aggregate value of The Americans, which has been great for its entire run.

Barb is overrated.
posted by crossoverman at 5:31 AM on July 14, 2017 [3 favorites]

Barb's reputation comes from the fact that every nerd writing about that show on the internet (I include myself) would have been Barb in those situations.
posted by supercres at 5:39 AM on July 14, 2017 [2 favorites]

I really wish that Barb had been a meaty enough role to merit an Emmy nomination, but it's hard for me to argue that it was. I think Shannon Purser is the bees knees, but I think this may be a case of Emmy voters not totally understanding what Barb's inexplicable popularity was about.

Nothing for Brockmire? And only the stunt coordinator for Luke Cage. Harsh.

Yes, I thought for sure Hank Azaria as well as the writers for Brockmire would get nominations. I'm now guessing Azaria got another one for Ray Donovan instead but I don't see that working out for him this year, because This is Life.

As far as Luke Cage is concerned, do those superhero shows generally get nominations outside of the technical categories? Plus, Luke Cage got a lot of odd complaints about being "too Black" (less common cultural references, AAVE dialogue, etc.) in a way that certain viewers felt they were being deliberately excluded or something. (RME.) I wonder if that sentiment carried over into people making the nominations?

The Expanse deserves a nomination but probably won't get a fair shake as long as they're on the Sharknado network.
