De burgemeester van Amsterdam is overleden.

Eberhard van der Laan, the mayor of Amsterdam, has, not unexpectedly passed away. A well like man who, in the fashion of the Dutch, did not mince words.. Recently thousands gathered outside the official residence to applaud for almost 20 minutes.

In my case they might applaud but only after they were certain I was gone...

I don't have dust in my eye
I was just telling someone recently that Amsterdam has changed so much in the years I've been visiting and, later, passing through to Wageningen or The Hague. I just spent a lovely off day there in late August, boat ride and lunch and sitting on a terrace. The biggest difference to me would be how much happier Amsterdammers have become since they decided residents come first, before visitors and tourists.
