While Google Street View may have made it easy to see the world from a roadway (also, also), as well as other selected locations, allowing some people to curate artistic and fascinating vistas from the automated panoramas, since 1999 Untraveled road allows travelers to document scenic views themselves and identify must-see locations for fellow travelers. While focused on the United States and more specifically National Parks and Monuments, as well as US highways, Canada, England and Italy are also represented. If you don't know where to start, check out locations popular today.

Re: "Untraveled road allows travelers to document scenic views themselves and identify must-see locations for fellow travelers" -- I'm not actually sure how the locations are selected and/or who takes the photos. I was hoping to find a link to submit your own photos, but no such luck.

Another "vintage internet" site dedicated to virtual tourism I just found: the American Southwest (dot net), online since 1994 (!), a "comprehensive guide to the national parks, national monuments and natural landscapes of West and Southwest USA."

It has 19706 photos online at the time of posting this comment, but it's lacking the fun turn-by-turn location touring of Untraveled Road.

Google Maps pinged my phone with a notification today. It wanted me to take some photos of a nearby business, and supply these photos to Google so that Google Maps could show people pictures of the business. I looked carefully at the notification to see how much Google was offering to pay me for rendering this service, but there was no mention of compensation. I guess they forgot.

Untraveled Road only has two locations east of the Mississippi River:
Savannah GA
St Augustine Beach

It appears they take their own photos, and usually have views in multiple directions from the same location, and a link to the next viewpoint nearby. However, the photos are mostly tiny, just 448 pixels wide.

The city of London is full of famous and beautiful buildings, parks and other landmarks.

...but we're giving you the catholic cathedral and some uninteresting backstreets.
