Not long after moving into our house in an "up and coming" Toronto neighbourhood, another recent arrival was pouring a floor for his 100 hear old garage and had asked me, along with his old university engineering chums to help out with a picnic "barnraising/floor pouring". One friend had shown up with a soil compactor and after a first pass, we all saw that a 1'x6' section of the floor had settled about 8 inches lower than the rest. A cement truck was scheduled to show up in a few minutes and we all stood around staring. After the pause, the friend with the compactor directed more gravel to be thrown on top and quickly compacted it all nice and level. I sometimes think about it.

I'm kind of a forensics junkie and enjoyed the book about NecroSearch, No Stone Unturned, which goes into more detail about some of their cases. It must be hard to strike a balance between trying to compensate people for their time and working with low law-enforcement budgets, and getting the word out about your consultancy vs seeming to gain publicity from murder cases.
