Ginger Baker / Sonny Sharrock, 1987 African Force Project (full album)

How many time signatures (at once) would you like your improvisations in? If you said "all of them", then step right up!

Unconscionably funky stuff on there too.

Sonny's solo during "Philly Dog" on Herbie Mann's "Live at the Whisky a Go Go" is one of the rare times that I've properly belly laughed at a guitar solo. Amazing.

Thanks for this post. I never particularly was a Sonny Sharrock fan, actually, but I enjoyed the interviews, which brought back a lot of pleasant memories of seeing people in concert like Miles, Cannonball, Ray Charles, Cecil Taylor, and a particular favorite of mine, the Art Ensemble of Chicago.

I had no idea Sharrock ever performed with Ginger Baker; will have to check that out.

He had the same discombobulating effect on (white) jazz critics that Hendrix had on (white) rock critics. Which was good for everybody, I think.
