Once he started, it was all about the stops...

Christopher Herwig is back with more wild architectural wonders: When Christopher Herwig, a Canadian photographer, first embarked on his arduous long-distance cycle from London to St Petersburg back in 2002, the outlandishly designed bus stop was nothing more than a pleasing oddity. What Herwig didn’t expect was that this was only the start of his life-long obsession; there were similarly peculiar roadside shelters scattered across the post-Soviet world. His Soviet Bus Stops Volume II is a new collection of bus stop photos from remote areas of Georgia, Ukraine, and Russia. Herwig previously on Metafilter: A fascinating journey of architectural obsession (also previously and previouslier).

Cool. I missed this the first time around. So amazing what you can do outside of the constraints of capitalism. It goes without saying the Soviet Union had numerous other constraints, but clearly not on bus stops.

I was on a bit of a train ride, to Minsk, which is not actually Russia but probably more Soviet and taking the slow train across to Vladivostok seemed just really interesting, but now I want to get off and take the bus too. Well it'll happen at least on gmaps.

We have the first Soviet Bus Stops book, and it is a big favorite in our household. I can't wait to check this one out!

I saw this at the gift shop at the Powerhouse museum in Sydney the other day. I had to wave my SO over to show her how unexpectedly awesome it was.
