Queer in the Deep South

“The rest of the country sees queer life in the Deep South as being really tragic and utterly challenging and ultimately ending in suicide, so, what I wanted was to sort of elevate these stories and sort of celebrate them in the way that I saw them flourishing.”
'New Deep South' Series Explores LGBTQ Life in Mississippi.
Episode 1 Instababy.
Episode 2 Kayla.
Episode 3 House of JNX, doesn’t seem to be available to watch online, but premiered at Tribeca Film Festival.

I know this completely beside the point, but I was enjoying Instababy right up until the police officer was texting while driving. Yikes. Still they seem like a good couple, I hope things work out for them they way they are hoping.

This is so good. Yes, yes yes yes yes yes. I just watched the first episode and I'm a bit speechless. I grew up in what I hope was the last generation in the south who felt like they had to leave to live. This is stunning to see.
Earlier this year I bought The Un-Natural State: Arkansas and the Queer South, by Brock Thompson. It hit all the high points for me. The local lore, the clubs and bars and 18+ venues, the names and places. I love every word of these queer histories. I'm over the moon to see contemporaries going through the struggle without expecting to move away, in full view.

do they short shrift the racist, sexist, bourgeois upper-middle-class gay white male scene here in Atlanta or is this a good documentary series

None of the three episodes focus on “the racist, sexist, bourgeois upper-middle-class gay white male scene.”
