"Outside of her day job, Markle is involved in a number of humanitarian projects. She has worked as a United Nations ambassador, visiting Rwanda and India, and written a powerful essay on combating the stigma surrounding menstruation. Windsor is a 33-year-old former soldier, having served in Helmand, Afghanistan with the Army Air Corps. He is currently unemployed but does charity work."

I am enjoying the heck out of this as a respite from the "real" news, I don't care how stage-managed it is, I like to see happy people.

Also, Markle is apparently a Remainer.

(Also, I need someone to write a comedy skit about Meghan Markle and Angela Merkel where they're being introduced and it's like, "Markle? Merkel. Merkel? Markle." because my typo-prone fingers are already ON IT.)

I heard the story on the radio; I had no idea who Meghan Markle was but noticed they used a very American euphemism about her being both American and "new blood" and though "why are they talking about her like she's Black?" Sure enough, she's biracial but NPR couldn't get past talking in euphemisms.

On a tangent: if, after they're married, The Firm (the opaque institution that runs the lives of the Royal Family) make arrangements to ensure that any children they have are born in the US, things get potentially much more interesting, as theoretically she could have produce a heir who could be both in line for the throne and eligible for the US Presidency. The House of Windsor may be playing the long game here.

Funny you should mention that: US law specifically holds that "children of foreign sovereigns" are exempt from birthright citizenship even if born on U.S. soil. Example: Bhumibol Adulyadej, a/k/a King Rama IX of Thailand, was born in Cambridge, MA, but was never a US citizen nor eligible to be president.

I would say not because Harry is not any sort of heir apparent and also, circumstances are far different from when Phillip had to abandon his Greek and Danish citizenships. You kind of get less pull as a privy council to force that sort of thing when public opinion will mostly likely be "couldn't give a toss" and there's no chance of them becoming sovereign.

Found it mildly heartening that they presented differing opinions from three different women of colour, a Guardian journo and someone else in the studio plus an American journo on the big screen. Time was when we'd have had discussion between maybe Jennie Bond, Nickunctuous Witchell plus Darcus Howe, or perhaps a single this-is-what-mixed-race-people-think interviewee grabbed off the street.

Someone assumed she was Catholic because she went to a Catholic high school, but there doesn't seem to be any other indication that she is, and lots of non-Catholics go to Catholic high schools. As far as I can tell, anyone who meets the residency requirement and is a US citizen has children that are automatically citizens. Since she obviously meets the residency requirements, I don't think that there is any way their theoretical child can be denied citizenship.

As for being president, as Ted Cruz (sorry) proved, the requirement is that you be a natural born US citizen, not that you actually have to be born in the United States, so I think the baby will be technically capable of being the US president no matter what happens.

acb: [...] theoretically she could have produce a heir who could be both in line for the throne and eligible for the US Presidency. The House of Windsor may be playing the long game here.

This made me cackle with glee, though I fear it's highly unlikely to occur. Presidency requires a "natural born citizen", which seems to be relatively simple to achieve, given that this term isn't actually defined in the constitution. However, it also requires fourteen years of residency in the United States, which is possible, though unlikely. Any child of Harry and Meghan's will be the seventh in line to the throne (Charles, William, George, Charlotte, William's Unborn Third Child, Harry, Harry's Eventual Child), barring any ascensions to the throne or any other kids from William.

Given how Harry is the Heir's second-born child, I don't think Harry or any kids would be encouraged to not live in the United Kingdom anytime soon, assuming all goes well with the family.

Of course, if there's a separation or divorce in the future (though I hope not!), it becomes more feasible if Meghan were to get custody and bring the kids back to the US. That's probably the likeliest scenario I can think of for a child of Harry and Meghan's to gain the 14 years of residency. Or perhaps a future child would go to the United States for university and then stay there?

Having said that, it's possible to lose one's citizenship (if one is a dual citizen, is my understanding) if someone serves in the armed forces of a country which is engaged in hostilities against the United States or if they commit and act of treason against the US or attempt/conspire to overthrow the US Government. So if they are, indeed, playing the long game here, they'd better cover their tracks pretty swiftly or those kids will have their citizenship revoked as soon as they're born. ;)

For the record, the United Kingdom apparently has no issues with dual citizens. That said, Prince Philip renounced his Greek and Danish titles a few months before marrying (then) Princess Elizabeth in 1947. While technically I think he's still Greek (having been born there), I think it's telling that he had to formally renounce his titles before marriage to Elizabeth and getting his own British titles (Baron Greenwich, Earl of Merioneth and, most commonly used, Duke of Edinburgh) and I wonder if there wouldn't be some kind of question about Meghan's citizenship. (Though any renouncement of American citizenship is irrevocable.)

...do people that marry into the Royal Family have to adopt the Church of England...

Not any more. The Succession to the Crown Act 2013, the Act that made the succession gender-neutral, also removed any restriction on marrying Catholics. The monarch still has to be in communion with the Anglican Church, as they are its theoretical Head, another matter long overdue for reform.

The Duchess of Kent, married to one of the Queen’s first cousins, converted to Catholicism in 1994, and I don’t think anyone was very bothered about it.

But being a small-r republican and fundamentally opposed to the very institution of monarchy, I won't get too excited about all of this. In fact, I'm likely to get annoyed at the further entrenchment and celebration of hereditary aristocracy to the detriment of democracy and meritocracy and all that, especially if it gets in the way of my already-booked-and-paid-for May vacation plans for London. But I promise I won't get in the way of everyone else's good time. Unless it indeed gets in the way of my vacation, in which case I will have Words To Say.

But yes -- best wishes to Harry and Meghan.

In our house we pretend that Mike (the protagonist in Suits) is her American boyfriend that she's in a relationship with behind the Prince's back with a secret identity.

So every time her character does something of questionable morality we tend to yell, "What would Harry think?!" And generally pretend that the actress and character are the same person when we can have some fun with it.

So, the part of me who spent time in British boarding school is secretly snickering about the perfectly poised predatory Sloane Rangers who must be slugging back gin from the bottle tonight.

I heard the story on the radio; I had no idea who Meghan Markle was but noticed they used a very American euphemism about her being both American and "new blood" and though "why are they talking about her like she's Black?" Sure enough, she's biracial but NPR couldn't get past talking in euphemisms.

Perhaps you heard a different NPR story, or it was on a different network, but none of the three NPR stories I found used language like that and two explicitly mentioned her racial background.

What is this law, and is Prince Harry a "foreign sovereign"?
...
Meghan is an American citizen (at least for now) so does this rule apply? Neither of King Rama's parents were American.

The law in question is U.S. v. Wong Kim Ark, 169 U.S. 649 (1989): "The Fourteenth Amendment affirms the ancient and fundamental rule of citizenship by birth within the territory, in the allegiance and under the protection of the country, including all children here born of resident aliens, with the exceptions or qualifications (as old as the rule itself) of children of foreign sovereigns or their ministers...."

As to whether Harry is a foreign sovereign, I would assume so since he's 5th in line for the throne, but I'm open to being convinced otherwise. On reflection, I think the more interesting question is that latter one, about whether Ms. Markel's American citizenship overrides this analysis altogether. The exception for foreign sovereigns (and, by extension, diplomats) does not seem to be applied in court very often and generally, yes, it is two foreign parents who are at issue. Of course US citizenship is also conveyed from parents to children, regardless of birth location. The Wong Kim Ark exception to jus soli does not necessarily imply an exception for children of U.S. citizens; it seems to me that different concerns would be at issue.

So, I don't know. I'm sure we'll get a nice long think piece on this topic if they ever have kids.

So they've chosen the wedding venue - St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle. Only holds 800. So there probably won't be any grand carriage parade through London like his brother (and father) had. Us spectacle-lovers may be a tad disappointed.

If they want to avoid complications, she might give up her US citizenship before they have any kids.

Meghan is her own spectacle and I'm already not disappointed

Government will ‘no doubt’ waive immigration rules so Meghan Markle can come to UK to marry Prince Harry.

After so many families divided over the last 5 years, this is absolutely sickening and an insult to everyone who has to go through these genuinely evil rules.

Meghan Markle's U.S. citizenship could cause tax headaches for British royal family -- argues that the requirement for US citizens to report worldwide income, combined with the fact that she's likely to have more than US$300K in assets so she'll have to file a Form 8938 (AKA "Statement of Specified Foreign Financial Assets"), means that Markle is likely to give up her US citizenship

Back in, I want to say 1999? Before the fancy-dress Nazi costume debacle, maybe, I read an article in Vanity Fair about Harry and William, and there was lots of tea about Harry's smoking, drinking, partying, and "emerging from the back garden" at various high-end social affairs with various young, high-born ladies.

The picture I remembered from the article was that of teenaged, widely smiling Harry at Eton in his dorm room sitting at his desk, facing the camera. Over that desk was a gigantic poster of Halle Berry in a tiny bikini, and there were no other posters of women on the walls. Heh.

I wish Meghan and Harry every happiness that a person who doesn't know them can muster.

Being a US citizen overseas is indeed a mess when it comes to taxes and finances (even things as simple as opening a bank account, which many foreign banks don't want to do for US citizens).

As a British royal, she won't exactly have any problems with her citizenship/passport if she gives up US citizenship (I suspect they have no trouble visiting the US, or indeed anyplace she can visit as a private US citizen now).

I'd certainly give mine up in that situation (I mean, I see a path where I would give it up in my own life, and thats a lot less clear-cut than her situation).
