I'm gonna keep you in love with me

The National's music video for Dark Side of the Gym, choreographed and directed by Justin Peck, and performed by Justin Peck and Patricia Delgado (SLYT). As Marina Harss puts it in the New Yorker, "the whole video is essentially an extended pas de deux, highly technical but low-key, intimate, and a little sexy."

The music video for "Dark Side of the Gym," from The National's latest album Sleep Well Beast is more of a short dance film, choreographed and directed by New York City Ballet resident choreographer Justin Peck. In the video, Peck dances with Patricia Delgado, formerly of the Miami City Ballet, who is his real life partner as well.

That was just beautiful, the song and the video both. Thank you for posting--I'd never heard of The National before.

Up until the end that was sorta making me want to fall in love one more time. It was lovely, thank you.

There are two versions of The National. There’s the calm, staid, nuanced album version and there’s the live Matt utterly losing his shit on stage scream singing through Squalor Victoria and Abel.

I am SO MAD that both shows in Montreal and Toronto sold out before I could get a ticket. SO. DAMN. MAD.

Nice. I know that they are dad-rock but I do like them.

Justin Peck has such lovely, playful musicality. He's not my favourite choreographer in the world, but his aesthetic is a great fit for this song/The National's vibe.

(Is this the place where I admit that my wedding dance was a pas de deux that I choreographed to a National song and tortured my husband with by making him learn and perform it?! Lol good times).

Their Tiny Desk concert is fantastic, and so is this recent show in Paris where they played the new album plus some old favorites.

i saw them in october and they were great, including their delightful cover of The Ramones' The KKK Took My Baby Away (which they dedicated to Donald Trump). excellent performances on this tour -- and some decent recordings floating around online for those who haven't got a chance to catch them live.

For ten years or so I just couldn't get into The National, Exile Vilify aside. In 2017 I suddenly love them.

I aged into dad rock.

This is a beautiful video. Thanks for posting.

10 years or so ago I had a co-worker who kept saying I'd just love The Killers and The National. Just this past year I had to admit she was right about The National (and not so much about The Killers.)

I love that there's even a credit for the balloons provider ("Balloons By / Geronimo Balloons.")

I love the sweeping, dreamy, gorgeous sound of their music. there are so many songs by The National that I cannot just stop listening to halfway through; I have sat in my car to let a song of theirs finish more times than I can count.

I have heart-eyes, watching this video.

Yeah, that's around when Vincent Moon was shooting a movie and Take Away Shows (previously) with them - had me mesmerized ever since... this piece is lovely, thanks for posting.

Compare. Contrast.

Their first album remains a favorite of mine, particularly Beautiful Head and The Perfect Song and especially Theory of the Crows, and I'm sad that none of that material makes it into the modern setlists.

sad dads.

That said, I love them. I'm generally not a fanboy with celebs/artists/etc., but at the most recent show I was at, I held Matt's hand, and held him aloft, and I was . . . pretty into it. So there's that.

This video is great though--dance like this makes me feel like I can't breathe, in the best way.

halation, the show at Forest Hills Stadium? That's the show I'm talking about. Ugh, they are so good live.

Just got back from the show - fantastic as expected (at least once the obnoxious couple directly in front of me left in a huff after getting told off by literally everybody around them)

A lot of Matt's inter-song banter was US politics related (I hear you guys had a long day today.. or a long year, I suppose) which produces an interesting reaction up here - cheers of helpless commiseration rather than the catharsis that I would imagine it engenders in the states. They also did a Ramones cover in honour (?) of the occasion.

The National's shows are a real joy. I've been lucky enough to see them in some pretty small shows the last few years, in the front row and jammed up against the stage. Their live energy is enough to make you recall those giddy teenage days when first you start going to shows on your own and become totally swept up in the catharsis of it all. At one of those shows Matt grabbed me and we sang one of my favorite songs together, and it's one of those memories that 12-year-old me would've just died over. We're going to see them in Vegas next month and can't wait. I've heard the new tour has been fantastic.

Sneaking in at the very tail end here to share some more Justin Peck choreography:
The Times Are Racing, In the Countenance of Kings, Everywhere We Go, and the NYCB's portion of Man on Fire by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes.
