RIP Oscar Gamble, 68. Known for his giant afro and lefty power. The face of a popular Topps baseball card.
Drafted by the Chicago Cubs in 1968 after he was scouted by Buck O'Neil
Wow - had no idea about the Buck O'Neil connection.

Saw him play in Cleveland vs Oakland. May 1974 - first MLB game I ever attended.

He had a bad defensive rep and played for a Yankees team loaded with bats, which limited his playing time. But he could flat out hit.

I was all set to ponder how few Yankees players never won a Series, but then I looked it up and apparently it's almost everybody who's played for them in the last 55 years.
