Kentucky Route Zero is an ongoing independent video game, a "magical realist journey through subterranean Americana." In preparation for the final act, developers Cardboard Computer have released another free interlude to the game. Previous interludes (all free, and available for Mac, PC and Linux) have included a VR stage play, a virtual art gallery, and a callable tourism hotline for an underground river. The most recent is a surreal live action cable access show, with a video game companion piece from the point of view of the show's producer.

All interludes are independent and quite enjoyable on their own, but connect to the larger narrative of the game. Don't miss the extra weirdness in the WEVP broadcast history page.

It's coming to Nintendo Switch and I plan on picking it up for this platform. I've heard such great things about this game. What a lovely post, I'll dig into this links very soon.

I'm waiting until Act 5 comes out, so I can do it all in one go. What an amazing game :)

I also really dig the aesthetic and art design. Reminds me quite a bit of Oxenfree which is also worth checking out if you like story-based/walking simulator/light puzzle-solving type of games.

I have no idea what this game is about anymore after waiting so long between installments.

That is one thing I dislike about episodic games. Unless they're released fairly regularly within a shorter span of time, it is often difficult to just jump back into the story/narrative. Not all games are like this.

The most recent Hitman game had episodes and was released like a Season of television. That worked in its favour as each episode was set in a specific setting and it was a large murder simulator sandbox. And the games reward replayability, so being able to just play the one episode for a month or two lets you get to know the game.

Also, Hitman's story isn't really the main draw of the game, so breaking it up into pieces isn't the worst thing and I liked the way it was released. For a game like Kentucky Route Zero, it's probably easier to just wait for it all to be released and play it through over the course of a few days, week or month.

I don't find it too difficult to jump back into KR0 after a gap because I am basically thinking about it all the time.

The most recent interlude was so apocalyptic that I'm too spooked to call the WEVP-TV phone number. Anyone given it a ring?
