Gee, in my mind the one thing that the Star Wars universe had going for it is that it didn't have [SPOILER], one of the worst crutches for Star Trek and so many other lazy sci fi shows to lean on.

Well, cleverly, with the destruction of the temple [SPOILER] isn't possible anymore. Good way to utilize it once and maybe leave open a possibility for live-action Ahsoka cause she went through the [SPOILER], without it becoming a crutch. I am a huge Star Trek fan- I'm just the biggest Trekkie and I feel that Trek is a good example of the best uses of [SPOILER] and the absolute worst uses of [SPOILER] where it is absolutely a crutch or worse, a gimmick. [SPOILER] doesn't make sci-fi lazy, it's only lazy if it's used poorly. (Which in many IP's it absolutely is.) I am withdrawing judgement until the series finale. I reserve the right to reverse my position if they start abusing it.

Mannnn, f that noise. +1000 that Star Wars is better without [SPOILER], to the point where all I had to do was read the above two comments to know what it was.

Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth [SPOILER] the [SPOILER]? I thought not. It's not a [SPOILER] the Jedi would tell you.

I thought the Force Gods on Mortis in The Clone Wars were much more tonally weird for Star Wars than the [SPOILER] in question tbh. Really we've been dancing around the edges of the possibility of [SPOILER] since Empire, so going there in a way that's limited isn't really objectionable to me.

I wonder what the [SPOILER] is, I bet it’s [censored]

*reads first article* oh god it is geez I would give this show a serious chance of becoming non-canon just because dealing with [SPOILER] is such a pain in the ass for writers and audiences. Maybe if there are super heavy restrictions or something.

*resists the temptation to say what [SPOILER] is even though she’s pretty much done with Star Wars after forty years of it*

Oh man! I was gonna make my first FanFare post about Rebels, since it doesn't seem like there's been one in a couple years, and I didn't realize until this afternoon that it's an hour away from over. I started watching it when it started a couple years ago, it was a thing that was on, and I'll have it on while I'm working if it's scifi/animated, especially a big title.
They've taken a question mark, no-stakes story and made it really, really good. All the better since they didn't start on a high point, or even a recognizable one. The writers, designers, animators, and everyone involved with this show deserve huge props.
OK. Gonna watch the new ones in a few.

All a'y'all who are saying you're done with Star Wars because of [SPOILER] even though you came back after green- screen-everything-boss-surrounded-by-yes-men-racist-alien-party numbers 1 through 3 realize that this show is canon, but canon to the degree that the ship from Rebels was on screen for 1.7s of Rogue One. Which makes it as canon as the idea that Star Wars and Star Trek are the same universe because JJ put an R2 in the space debris in his Star Trek reboot.

I gotta say I love this show. I love how they're using old Ralph McQuarrie designs that never made it into A New Hope. I love the fact that almost every time a known Star Wars character shows up they're voiced by the original actor (Frank Oz?!? Billy Dee Williams?!?! JAMES EARL JONES!??!). I was never into The Clone Wars (I was smitten by the Tartakovsky version instead) but can appreciate that Filoni is making call backs to that series as well.

So what I'm saying is both cut them some slack because they earned it and it doesn't matter nearly as much as you think it does because as much as they say this is canon it's only going to get the most cursory of Easter egg references in the films.

Ah, Jeez.

Well, I think I can pat myself on the back for jumping ship when it got bought by Disney, again (this happens increasingly often) and go back to hugging my old EU paperbacks until they literally fall apart.

...no, It's not pathetic, Tales from Jabba's Palace is art I tell you!
posted by pan at 9:01 PM on February 27, 2018 [1 favorite]

I'm with thecjm on this. It is not nearly as big a deal overall (this well worn scifi trope is likely limited to this specific story and is there specifically as a vehicle to preserve the beloved character). I haven't caught up with this season yet but everything I've seen in the previous seasons makes me think they will do a good job with this one. Rebels has done more to make the Star Wars universe better, coherent and interesting then the last 6 live action films.

I haven't been watching Clone Wars at all and when I first saw that trailer and read those comments about Star Trek I thought [SPOILER] was [Wesley Crusher]. Something about that adolescent boy hero bildungsroman voice is just too damn much. Mefi friends, is the possibility of Ahsoka Tano and Twi'lek lady worth dealing with this?

This show has brought me more entertainment and joy than any other Star Wars related thing.

I'm more than willing to cut them a little slack. I want to see where they go in the final episode before I pass true judgement.

Also, this [SPOILER] may be related to a future project, so it might serve a much larger purpose.

Have faith. May the Force be with you, always.

Ok anyone that reads this far down without recognising the spoiler risk is asking for it. As there's no real way to disguise it at this point be warned:

sexyrobot: FTL only implies SPOILER under our laws of physics. Maybe hyperspace is just careful about not having SPOILER (and has unattractive physics as a result)

But it was more than just the shot of the Ghost which could be easily ignored. Hera is also called over the Yavin P.A. system and Chopper can be seen on screen. One shot is an Easter egg. Three call outs is a deliberate attempt to place the show in canon.

The show IS Canon.

Supposedly, after Disney bought Star Wars and had the "Great Purge" that banished all non-film products to "Legends" status, all the film, TV an books are now Canon.

But that's ALL we'll ever get - a shout out, a name added during ADR, a ship or a droid added by the effects team. There's never going to be a Star Wars live action movie starring Hera or Sabine or Zeb (jesus I just typed "Wrex" instead of "Zeb" and now I want a cranky Krogan as part of a rebel crew so, so bad). Like how we know that the Chuck Wendig books are canon and they deal with the teenaged version of Greg Grunberg's character from the new trilogy, but do you really think it's ever going to be referred to in the movies? And if so, in anything more in depth than, "I've seen something like this before" wink and nod?
