Zoophilia->Metafilter: 19 paths, 3 degrees.

Felching->CNN: 2 paths, 2 degrees.

This is the new best thing.

I can’t find any pair more than 3 degrees away.

It feels like being able to use the References section is cheating, but aunno.

Whew! I got my first four-degree-er. Bokononism to Kenton Grua.

Napoleon -> Drake (musician) was surprisingly short.

This is awesome.

Can anyone find 5 degrees with only a single path? Haven't managed that yet but I did find a 1/4:
Erdős–Faber–Lovász conjecture -> Diamond Bar High School

...which uses the surprising fact that Hank Aaron and Paul Erdős once autographed a baseball together

I managed to find a 7-degree connection (582 paths!) by hitting up the random article page and looking for stubs:
O-phosphoserine sulfhydrylase to Gunnar Knudsenfjella (mountain in Svalbard)

equalpants: Here's a six-degree single path!
Larry Christman (American politician) to Gunnar Knudsenfjella (mountain in Svalbard)

Oh wow, nice!

Another challenge: find a pair where the degree from A->B is much greater than the degree from B->A.

A difference of 1 isn't hard. I haven't found a difference of 2 yet...
posted by equalpants at 9:39 PM on February 28, 2018

Fun! I got a 6.

Oh, and it goes 4 in the other direction.

A—B: 1 path, 3 degrees.
B—A: 156 paths, 4 degrees.

Isn't there some aphorism about how nothing's more than two links away from the Second World War?

Oh look:

Found 6 paths with 2 degrees of separation from MetaFilter to World War II

Heh... one of the paths is "Metafilter->Peer Pressure->World War II".

Anyway, I'm off to invade Manchuria. All the cool kids are doing it.

aw come on guys i was just about to go to bed

Anal cleansing -> Metafilter
5 / 3

If there weren't links to "public domain" in the references section, we'd be harder to find!

4 / 339 for Rezz -> The Book of Five Rings
Only 4/8 the other way

My son likes to play "Wiki Races" where you compete on who can get from one Wikipedia page to another the quickest. The rules are:
  • At the start, someone chooses a Wikipedia page to start on, and another person chooses the one to end on.
  • After the first race, start from the last Wikipedia page in the previous race and a non-winner of the previous race gets to chose the next page to race to.
  • You can only go forward by clinking links to other Wikipedia pages in the text of the page you're on.
  • No back arrow allowed.
  • No use of the "Find" key.
  • No use of any Wikipedia tools like "What links here?"
Last night we had "Air Canada" => "six gill shark" => "Word of Warcraft" => "whale louse"

I wish this would show where the actual link is. For instance, I put in "penguin" and "flamingo," and it says they're directly connected, but ctrl+f "flamingo" on the "penguin" page reveals nothing.

I viewed page source and then ctrl+f for "flamingo" and the word was "Phoenicopteriformes"

Welp, this is awkward...

No path of Wikipedia links exists from Larry Storch to Anal leakage.

HA!

Damnit, can't get more than 4 with even things like "Continental drift" => "A.1. Sauce"! That one actually included Bill Gates in one path... *sheesh*
