Do the DVDs feature the original songs that were played when the show aired?

If you scroll right, there is a column indicating if the song is on the DVD or not.

Interesting. I watched the show during its original run in the 70s and was surprised to see how many shows had only one or two songs in them. I was also surprised how the DVD series had so many of the original songs on it (although they were able to re-license less than half the songs on a few).

Do the DVDs feature the original songs that were played when the show aired?

Apparently Shout Factory did a pretty good job of restoring most but not all of the original music.

Ah I see it now. Thanks. More songs made it onto the DVDs then I thought.

They did an excellent job with the DVDs. There is stuff missing (like 'Dogs'), but where it is missing they managed to fit in some pretty good facsimiles. The end result is pretty seamless, unless you're particularly focused on the music instead of the show. I had no complaints whatsoever.

I was hoping he would list the time Mr. Carlson accidentally broadcast dead air for a few minutes.

This is a straight-up decent playlist, especially the songs that are "played by Venus." If you have a half hour to spare there are much worse ways to spend it than listening to a sampling of Bill Evans and Marvin Gaye, with additional super-frothy R & B thrown in.

Yeah, I came across this spreadsheet a few months ago (don't remember how) and sent the guy a thank-you email for putting so much time into this wonderful labor of love.

The Shout Factory people DID do a really good job with the DVDs, and I've got to think it was something of a labor of love for them, too. For so many companies, the decision seems to come down to either "can't afford the licensing, let's just replace everything with generic filler music" or "can't afford the licensing, no point in doing a re-release with filler music, no one will buy it". To put in the time and money and legwork to re-license as many things as they did shows a real commitment to the show and its fans.

(Personally, I favor a mechanical-license-style license for video - in my perfect world, there would be a set fee and anyone could use anything they want, ever, just like for recording cover versions of songs. Copyright law is purportedly supposed to promote the progress of science and useful arts, not stymie it.)

I've been re-watching the series and am loving noticing the music, and the bits of the show that I don't really remember because they were always cut from the syndicated reruns I used to watch.

I love this show. I LOVE this spreadsheet. Thanks for posting it here!

I gave up on my radio career midway through WKRP's first season when I realized I identified with the mid-day DJ that never appeared and was rarely talked about. But after I got an accounting job at a company that made (among other things) trophies, I looked up their Trophy Figure catalog and found a pig figure - in silver, of course - and paid them to make up a dozen of the pigs on little pedestals which I then sold at a radio conference in downtown L.A. as "Silver Sow Awards". It was the easiest money I ever made doing anything radio-related.
