Japanese trailer with different footage (I can't deal with dubs).

I am both excited and wary.

RIDE ON SHOOTING STAAAH fuckin' a.

I really wasn't particularly sanguine about this when they first announced it. But what the hell--if it sucks I can always just pretend it never happened. So, yeah, position your hand so that it's hovering slightly above the 'disavow' button, and let's do this.

I am amused they worked the Akira bike slide in at the end of the International trailer there. But with a convertible, making it even more ludicrous.

FLCL was the first time I'd seen something where I felt too old to really understand it... but also knew that if I'd been born in 1985 instead of 1970, it would have been the sun my adolescence revolved around. It's a weird feeling.

If it makes you feel any better I was born in 1984 and I don't really get it either. Cowboy Bebop is the anime I revolved around at the turn of the millennium.

Does anyone have a working link to the ATHF movie's 'low res' web site?

This is intensely relevant to my trippy counter culture interests.

I expect this may do that thing where the original gets its ideas from a broad, manic tapestry of cultural influences and ideas, and the follow-up gets all its ideas directly from the original. It'll probably be fun, but I'm bracing for it to feel a bit filtered.

The original was handed around my classes on bootleg DVDs like contraband Gnomon Workshop videos, because the DVDs cost $40 for 3-episode packs and none of us had the money back then, but this show was studied.

Its appeal may be laser-focused on people of a specific age group, like GCU said, but I still love it. The pop sensibility, the music, the absurdist sci-fi. Disaffected outsiders learning their value. It just pushes my buttons so hard. If the new seasons still do that, I'm still in.

I hope the trailer is misleading because it looks like it's just rehashing.

Yes and no. FLCL is, at its heart, a coming of age story dealing with learning what it means to be an adult and dealing with your emotions and hormones, and (as pointed out above) about the disaffected and outsiders learning that they have value, that they can be great. But as the trailer showed, that all can take different forms, and how a generation expresses that changes, and that's where I think we'll see the main differences.

Also, it's clear that at least one of the N-O carriers is female in each of the series, which is a nice change since the N-O channel, or at least the stuff coming out of it, is thematically linked to sexual awaking, and thus we'll see how that's considered for a woman.

And (as again was pointed out) we do see bits of classic scenes made even sillier by taking them to now, surreal limits.

The originally FLCL was 100% my jam back when I was in my anime phase. I still consider it one of my favourite anime and I bought a really sweet collector's edition of it for like 80 bucks back in the day with postcards and a t-shirt and didn't regret it a bit. I think it perfectly captured angst, anxiety, and that miasma of melancholy of early teenage-hood.

I'm actually looking forward to these new shows. I've always been really hesitant about revivals and continuations made so many years later because they almost never work out, but a part of me is super jazzed about this. Maybe because it's two seasons back to back? They can bounce off and contradict each other in weird meta ways, which is what I'm hoping for.

I love FLCL so much. I’m beyond excited, if even just for some more FLCL jamz from The Pillows. I forgot how much I loved that theme.

FLCL (the original) is definitely about boners though, right?

In part. And there's a metaporical castration scene (you'll definately know it when you see it. Poor popsicle...)

It's funny, I was born in 1965, and FLCL felt like someone had put in a key and finally unlocked a part of my brain I desperately needed opened. No matter how old you get, the part of you that's an awkward kid still lingers and likes to find things to identify with.

The ED for FLCL Alternative looks and sounds rather nice, and is reminiscent of the original ED.
