Podcasting from the Horrored Halls

Faculty of Horror is a podcast by Canadian journalists and academics Andrea Subissati (Sociology) and Alexandra West (Film Studies) that takes on horror films from a feminist angle.

While it's one of those "two people talk back and forth about a topic" podcasts, they do a lot of prep and editing, so the energy and observations keep coming. You can get the episodes from the site or your favorite podcast aggregator.

If you are going to olny listen to one episode, "Kill Is Kiss: Pontypool (2008)" is the episode that sold me.

Thank you! I hadn't heard of this podcast and it sounds right up my alley...even though I am too chicken to watch horror movies, I really like reading/listening to analysis of them (especially feminist analysis).

Just adding my official two severed thumbs up. I've been listening for a long time now and they are consistently interesting. Glad to see Faculty of Horror show up here.

I searched for 'Black' and lo and behold episode #1 is Black Christmas / Halloween so I'm hooked right in - thanks!

I'm listening to their take on John Carpenter's It right now, which isn't a movie I've read critiqued from a feminist lens, and so far, enjoyable! Thanks for sharing.

I think I've listened to nearly every episode. Very good stuff. Worth a listen even if you don't actually do horror movies.

I've been listening to them for some time. I teach some film now and again, and some horror and Gothic film. Occasionally, I've been frustrated when they admit to not having watched something more than once, but beyond that, they are a treasure.

I recently started listening to Switchblade Sisters, which is also a podcast a show about horror and genre movies from female perspectives, though from the few episodes I've heard so far it doesn't seem to take a super analytical / critical approach. This one looks right up my alley, thanks!

I listened to a couple of these last night. I liked them, and now I have a new podcast to follow. Neato.

This podcast lost me a few years back when they equated abortion and infanticide. Hard nope.

Listened to the first podcast (Halloween and Black Christmas) and I was a bit frustrated. They describe the characters in BC as better developed and more likeable than in H - but that’s the point. The girls in H are only in high school (compared to college in BC) - they are literally less developed. And I’d argue that part of the point of the slasher genre is the enjoyment around the murders - and that making the characters unlikeable is deliberate - it’s easier to cheer on the monster as a strange sort of pseudo-protagonist.

I'm really enjoying this; I especially like how one of the two hosts is constantly swearing. I thought they had a really interesting take on Calvaire, although they failed to convince me in the same episode that Martyrs is a good movie (yes, I know everyone else on the internet thinks so too, I just don't buy it). One of the hosts wrote a book on the New French Extremity, and they have both obviously thought about the subject a lot. Their segment on the first two Alien movies was good too.

After listening to a few dozen more podcasts, I have to say that I’m really liking it. It’s both inspired me to watch several films and given me a new perspective about horror films in general.
