Meshell Ndegeocello has released an album of covers, including a reinvention of TLC’s Waterfalls. Other tracks include Prince’s Sometimes it Snows in April and Tina Turner’s Private Dancer.

The Billboard interview. The NPR review. The full album on Spotify and Apple Music.

Sort of lateral, but since we're talking about covers of TLC, why not let Kacey Musgraves cover No Scrubs?

That's some pretty solid ventriloquism in the Waterfalls video. Those people's lips don't move at all!

(Jokes aside, this is good stuff. Thanks!)

Her spotify playlists are dope folks, check em out. The one called Blacknuss is on point (though for some reason it has no female voices).

And she made a playlist with the originals, followed by the covers for Ventriloquism.

The album is seriously really, really good. Gave it a listen while I was working from home due to snow a couple weeks ago. It is well worth your time.

I knew just about every cover - a lot them (excepting "Waterfalls") were soundtracks to my middle school days. "Nite and Day" and "Tender Love" are great re-arrangements. And man, that Prince song is so good (both the cover and the original).

"Sometimes It Snows in April" is my favorite Prince deep cut--which was from a pretty regrettable movie ("Under the Cherry Moon") and a pretty spectacular mid-80s album ("Parade"--can we get a hippybear go-over of "Parade"?!?!?!).

Ndegeocello's cover is a pristine reinterpretation of the song's melancholy. And makes me miss Prince even more.

Great to see this here! This album is perfect, except for the fact it ends.

"Sometimes It Snows in April" is my favorite Prince deep cut

Prince was from Minnesota. As I shovel my walk today, let me tell you he was not being metaphorical.
