So much of American (and apparently Canadian) culture is stiob or a relative, it feels like.

Absolutely loved this, thank you.

Not on the subject of Gremlins 2, but on Peterson - I’m becoming a connoisseur of a good Jordan Peterson beatdown, and this will definitely go on the list. Here are some others I have so far:

Is Jordan Peterson the stupid man’s smart person? (Macleans) - not wild about this one because of the name-calling, even for a good cause, and because it egregiously violates Betteridge’s Law of Headlines.

The Right's Favorite New Intellectual Has Some Truly Pitiable Ideas About Masculinity (Alternet) - Hey, I just did a post about Jacob Bacharach!

Postmodernism Did Not Take Place: On Jordan Peterson’s 12 Rules for Life (Viewpoint) - My personal favourite, because it swiftly dispenses with JP to get onto a long and fascinating disquisition about Derrida and Foucault.

A Serious Man (The Baffler) - Thorough and relatively sober deconstruction of his many fallacies and misrepresentations.

Jordan Peterson’s Bullshit (Jacobin) - Marxists furious at Peterson’s misrepresentation of Marxism.

I don't know how I misread Jordan Peterson as Logan Paul, but I had to rescan a few times to clear it up.

Key & Peele explain how Gremlins 2 came to be made.

A couple weeks ago I got off a longhaul flight back to auckland and I watched Gremlins 2 on the plane. Then that twitter account popped up when I was reading the internet in a jetlagged daze and I read the previously article.

And until now I assumed I'd hallucinated the whole thing.

"subversive affirmation"? We got that. Like everything else - spandex, brazeers, golf cars, Harry Belefonte, that was invented in the U.S. of A. back in the 1960s. By the Great Generation.

One example, in case you need a reminder: In his hit record, Vaughn Meader did impressions of very important guys like Kennedy and Krushchev (sp?). One gag was when his gang went out for food.

They all order their food. Castro orders 'Pregunte que usted puede hacer para su patria'. Krushchev growls phlegmishly, in borken English, "Oh, you don't have to order special for me. I'll just have a bite of everybody else's.

Mister Moofoo: It's weird you bring that up because this entire time I've been imagining him as Logan Paul in my head...

Gremlins 2 is so upsetting. The misogyny is really over the top. Always been weirded out by it.

Wait, which misogyny in particular? Most of the gender dynamics seemed to be very overtly satirized specifically to address the schisms in 80s corporate and public culture (1990 was still the 80s).

Uh, if you didn't catch the misogyny, maybe watch it again? The schism you speak of they address is women in corporate America are ball busting bitches. It's disgusting.
