The Weedian Abides

On this auspicious date in 2018, Matt Pike and Al Cisneros have reunited alongside Neurosis drummer Jason Roeder to birth a new Sleep LP, The Sciences (album stream). The record was teased less than 24 hours in advance, unless you count a cryptic Morse code message issued last year. posted by Existential Dread (25 comments total) 12 users marked this as a favorite

I am loving this album so much, have been chafing for it for years. It's fantastic to hear the studio version of Sonic Titan, but I might love this live version even more - pretty great to see Pike cracking it out, too.

On a side note: I really wanna rock a Sleep t-shirt, but at 41, I can't justify putting pot leaves on my body. The options for adults with long torsos are narrow as hell.

oh god I'm getting a contact high over the internet just thinking about this.

fwiw the "album stream" link requires either an Apple Music or Spotify account to listen to entire tracks rather than 30 second excerpts.

HELL YES.

Saw this earlier today but could only find a link to buy the vinyl. Hope it becomes available on Bandcamp. Streaming on Spotify for now.

Super annoyed that it's not on Bandcamp; I don't want to use Spotify or Apple or Amazon.

Sorry about that. I thought the Spotify links were full streaming until I remembered that I'm on a work laptop and we have a work Spotify account that I must be logged into. Glad I included the YouTube links.

Yeah, I don't mind, since the YouTube links work. I thought it was worth a head's up though.

These are certainly some sticky riffs.

Also, I love that NPR, of all outlets, covered this release. I would have figured this was waaaaay outside their ambits of content and hipness.

I clicked through to one of the YouTube song links and the ad that showed before was for Keebler's Fudge Cookies. A+ targeted marketing there, team!

Check out the 'Viking's Choice' music section, they've got a solid survey and top ten metal albums of the year and such. I mean it's not Invisible Oranges or Cvlt Nation or anything, but they definitely go outside the expected lanes...

NPR covered Sleep a decade ago.

Take a cue from Matt Pike - do you even need a shirt?

Sadly, it looks even more sad at 60. Well, it never looked exactly good at any age, frankly. Still......Have a dab?

The only Sleep shirts available through the regular vendors are variants on the "Holy Mountain" cover art; which only features an obscured pot leaf. You can get ones with just the Sleep logo from that cover, though. No pot leaf necessary.

The album sounds great and I'm not even high yet. This review from The Quietus says that Antarcticans Thawed is the album's centerpiece but after just one listen it's my least favorite song. Will definitely be ordering a vinyl copy so that may change after some more listens.

Not a lot of tunesmiths produce works that could be decribed as dank, but you can be stone cold sober and get a contact high off Sleep's riffage. Ordered an album to enjoy proper sometime on a future such cosmic alignment.

Love wearing my bong-huffing astronaut t-shirt to work (insurance company) on casual Friday.

Man last time I saw these guys play, I didn't actually see them because I had to go sit in the car with the windows rolled all the way up in the parking lot so my guts would calm down. It was gloriously deafening.

Fuckacken a guys, this is definitely the best type of rock to which I am currently rocking!
