Ello, ello, wot's all this then?

His YouTube clips often show highlights of low-adrenaline action, including officers pulling people over for texting while driving and breaking up a scuffle between Just Eat delivery drivers. “Not many other YouTubers bother to post these more routine calls, so it's somewhat of a niche that people seem to quite enjoy,” he says.
A group of UK Grand Theft Auto players got tired of the usual murdering and decided to roleplay as proper British cops, modding GTA V to include all the tat PC Plod would need, uniforms, kits, Volvo XC90 jam sandwiches and all. The resulting low-drama, high-relaity action is captured on their Youtube channel.

Hee! I find this remarkably soothing.

I found a video where the copper runs while doing a stop! ... He runs back to his vehicle to shut his car door as it's open and would be in the way of sidewalk traffic if there was any.

It makes a nice climate change simulator video too, what with the snow and slush amid all the palm trees.

Just watched the first episode where they stopped the guy for no proof of insurance. The dialogue is surprisingly realistic, which makes for a strange juxtaposition with the game interface. I’m not a fan of reality cop shows, but found this mesmerizing!

Volvo XC90 jam sandwiches

A very specific kind of sandwich.

That's surprising. It must be very basic to the program.
Culture question... do British police stop at red lights during a chase??

Excellent post title.

Cute.

...By the way, the "Careless Cycling" one, while entertaining, is apropos to that recent AskMe about why people don't want to give their names when stopped by the police. The cop sees a cyclist run a red light (I guess?) and stops him to question him. From quick research, this normally only results in an on-the-spot fine of less than fifty pounds. But because the cyclist doesn't give a correct address or date of birth, suddenly he's under arrest for obstructing a constable, and a string of other charges are tacked on. (And his bike's going to get stolen.) Arbitrary demands for information can often be leveraged in this manner by law enforcement with bad intentions.

Next episode the friendly officer gets to know a comely young lass at an anti-GMO protest and ends up getting her pregnant. The gameplay ends when you walk out of her and the kids life and go back to being a friendly copper round the estates.

Taking a game that glorifies criminal abandon, reckless behaviour, and a gangster lifestyle, and then modding it so that you can play as the oppressive forces of the state while they go about mundane business would make Foucault absolutely do his nut

I was glad to see a mention of potential use as a training mechanism for cops. Especially having live people role-play the "criminals" and citizens, you could do amazing things for de-escalation training with a tool like this.

I love how, in addition to driving on the wrong side of the road, they are enforcing law and order in a cityscape that is obviously nowhere in the UK. Kind of reminds me of Due South.

More than that, I love a world where police encounters don't end in instant shootout.

This is a delight! I'd like to see other local versions.

The cop sees a cyclist run a red light (I guess?) and stops him to question him. [...] Arbitrary demands for information can often be leveraged in this manner by law enforcement with bad intentions.

There is nothing arbitrary about this. When asked, the cyclist admits he was stopped for riding on the pavement/sidewalk. It's illegal to ride on the sidewalk in the UK if you are over 14.

Don't do the crime if you can't do the time. (Don't do it.)

In the part you cut out, I explicitly noted that the cyclist had committed an offense (running a red light; the officer says he did not stop him for riding on the pavement) and what the usual punishment for such an offense is. (So, not exactly sure why you're explaining that to me?) However, the demand for additional information ended up turning the encounter into an actual arrest, a string of additional charges, and very likely lost property to the cyclist. The "time" here would otherwise been a thirty-pound on-the-spot ticket. If you don't see the potential problem there, particularly in other cases where the underlying offense is questionable, I don't know what to tell you.

freya_lamb - Just me making a joke about the irony of an infants' school being named after a monarch popularly suspected of being responsible for murdering the young Princes in the Tower. :)

Aha! I get it now. Many places are named after Rich 3rd in Leicester. My infant self missed the irony of that one!
