Kate Spade, born Katherine Noel Frances Valentine Brosnahan, has been found dead in her Manhattan home at age 55. [Warning, suicide]

She started Kate Spade handbags in 1993. In 1996, she was named the CDFA America's New Fashion Talent in Accessories. Neiman Marcus Group bought the company outright in 2006. Last year, she changed her name to Kate Valentine, started a new line of accessories by the same name with her husband, Andy Spade.

Ms. Valentine was the Chair of the Board of the New York Center for Children.

Katherine Noel Frances Valentine Brosnahan

With a name like that, her only career choices were fashion designer, evil baroness, fancy art critic, or frog. She chose well.
RIP.

I was trying to figure out where I’d seen the name Brosnahan recently. Rachel Brosnahan, Kate’s niece, was interviewed on WTF last week.

I am not into fashion, I'm a total normcore dude, however I have owned several Jack Spade products because holy hell are they indestructible, my messenger bag is going on 15 years now of hard, daily use. I like the products enough that I actually followed Kate Spade a bit and loved hearing her speak in interviews and podcasts. She was an achiever who achieved, this sucks.

Not just niece, but a gifted actress and comedian (hence the WTF interview). She killed in "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel".

Shocking news, that someone seemingly so filled with light and whimsy proved to be not so.

Safe journey, Kate.

I work at a fashion brand company HQ and the news spread like wildfire this morning. Her brand was something we always took inspiration from - the whimsical nature, the quality of the products.
May she find peace and relief from the pain she must have been silently suffering from.

just had a really nice chat with my neighbor yesterday and we touched on our mutual struggles with depression and getting through the day to day stuff. what we see from the outside is so misleading, as the depressed are often so good at hiding their pain. we don't want to be a burden, or get you down, man.

hugs for all who want them

When I was in college, I bought my first Kate Spade bag. It was a small black backpack type bag. It was a lot of money and I felt guilty, but I bought it for myself for my birthday anyway.

I used that bag for 20 years. No joke. It went with me to a beach adventure in Belize and my first trip to Paris. It was the best bag. Two years ago, the zipper finally broke on it and could not be repaired.

I am sorry for her friends and family for what they are going through. I am sorry for what she went through.

My reading glasses are Kate Spade. This may sound like a dippy random thing to share, but her eyeglass frames are kind of a godsend -- they fit my small head perfectly and the aesthetic is spot-on nerdy-retro stylish without being toooooo much.

She's about ten years older than me and the brand consistently NAILS the fashion needs of a certain type of GenX woman.

What a terrible, terrible shame.

The only true jasmine-scented fragrance I've liked is Beauty, by Kate Spade. It's been discontinued now, and costs a fortune to buy, so I've been holding on to my almost-done bottle for dear life.

I wore some to work today in her honor.

The first bag I ever admitting loving to the point of not being rational about bags was a Kate Spade cross body purse. My mom had just bought it. This was about 3 months after I had come out to her as a trans woman. It was early summer. Fast forward to Christmas, my mom pulled me aside quietly from the large family gathering and handed me the purse, she said I needed to know what it felt like to have a bag that I loved like that. Of course, my mom being my mom said “I just want you to know that I feel the same way about it as you do”.

I still have it, much loved and worn. I only bring it out now for certain occasions. I fucking love that bag. I turned from a lost, feral trans girl into a woman wearing that bag.

So yeah. There’s my words.

That's so right, right there. Her line always had fun, whimsical items that you could wear to work or a party. Other than a Disney Haunted Mansion print Dooney & Bourke bag, my designer accessories are all Kate Spade. Most from Thredup, some from ebay, a few bought new. I have a large white scarf with black eyeglass print that goes with jeans, work suits, sundresses, you name it. For a while I had the matching iPhone case. And hey, those Kate Spade hybrid phone cases are gold. I drop my phone all the time and there is not one ding.

I hate this news.

Many years ago I went to some kind of indescribable art fair /party under the Brooklyn Bridge and Kate Spade had set up stands offering free popcorn in the most beautiful paper cones with swirly handles - that was my Kate Spade 'bag'. I kept it for a long time. I hope it survived my latest move. I need to go find it.

She seemed like such a nice lady.

I remember seeing my first Kate Spade bag in NYC more than ~25 years ago, as a young professional, and dumbstruck at how perfectly she captured what I wanted in a bag. Those black bags with the bows, I will forever be in love. I had no idea she'd sold the company, but I'm still
wrecked by her suicide, I've been thinking about it all day.

I’m a dude, and I have known about Kate Spade for years. There’s something lovely about the fact that she provided the work bags for a generation of women (perhaps the most gender equal generation we humans have managed to produce yet, with a long way to go implicitly acknowledged) to take to their high power professional jobs, my amazing wife included. I’d say she’s definitely earned her place in the museum of Fight the Patriarchy.

Depression is shit. There is help. And it’s incumbent upon all of us to change the condition of modern living that seems to be making us all so depressed.

This article includes some thoughts from her sister. Tragically, stigma seems to have played a big part, by making her feel she couldn't seek help because it might harm the "happy-go-lucky" image of the brand.

I cashed in my Westlaw rewards points at the end of law school for what was the first of several Kate Spade bags I own. For a now-35 lawyer, Kate Spade is the one brand I've been (relatively) loyal to my entire professional career; I may buy other bag brands sometimes, but I always come back. Our wedding photos are in Kate Spade frames on the bookcase. Her products have brought a lot of joy to my daily life. I'm so very sorry that she suffered so much.

I haven't owned one of her handbags, but last year I treated myself to my first new pair of prescription sunglasses in well over a decade. I have a narrow face, and the Kate Spade brand was one of the few in the store that didn't look ridiculously oversized on my head.

I normally don't care what brand my glasses are, but in light of the fact that the Kate Spade handbags I liked looking at never seemed to fit my lifestyle enough to justify buying one, I thought it was neat to have Kate Spade sunglasses.

My mother bought me my first Kate Spade purse for Christmas last year. It's a delicate black cross-body purse, and I love it because my mother bought me something because she thought it suited me. Most of her gifts for me are things that she likes, and she thinks that I should like them, too. (I don't, usually, because we have wildly different styles.)

I haven't used it much, it always seemed too nice and too lovely. I should fix that.
