I had no idea that New Zealand was settled by people from Northern Ontario.

This is definitely a New Zealand I recognise. Unfortunately.

For some reason I am reminded of the time I heard an engine revving loudly outside my house. When I investigated it was my neighbour, a prospect for the Outcasts (a local gang) who had chained a car to the power pole that fed our house and neighbours, right outside our place. He explained that the car had been in an accident and by reversing with the front of the body chained to the pole, he was able to pull it back into shape.

I expressed some concern that the pole was wobbling somewhat and he said "oh don't worry, we did this last week while you were away just fine."

Greymouth is a town on the mouth of the river Grey in the West Coast region of our South Island. (NZ English language place names are almost always namesakes of places in the UK, a settler's surname, or very plain geography, unlike Māori place names which tend to record historical or mythical events). It has always been a pretty rough place, in my experience overfilled with drunk angry dudes who've been at sea a bit too long. In recent years the coast has fallen on hard times, as all the local industries of mining, forestry and fishing struggle, and tourism isn't really replacing them. Coasters are great people, rugged as, and good at dry rural drollery, but maybe this dude isn't the best exemplar of the breed.

That's why I used a tree for that. A very large tree, out of eyesight of all the neighbors to hide my shame.

And you don't sit and rev, you have to start with lots of slack, shoot back and give it a jerk but NOT TOO HARD for the love of God oh God no.

"I knew what I was in for. The big pole."

Eventually, the big pole comes for us all, my friend.
