In Detroit's busiest ER, a man with his own dark past tries to halt a cycle of violence [LATimes] 'In the first year of the program, Winans received a letter from President Obama honoring his achievements as a mentor. He keeps it in his office along with a photograph of himself in a prison uniform and a portrait of his father taken shortly before he was killed.'

Link does not work in Europe because Tronc papers still can't handle GDPR. Is there an alternate source?

I'm sorry. I wasn't aware of that. Here's an archive of the webpage: archive.today/pOiaz

Thank you for posting this. For those who can't access the article, Mr Winans, fellow Violence Intervention Specialist Calvin Evans and program founder Dr. Tolulope Sonuyi are in this DLive video.

My father and my mother both worked at Sinai Grace hospital - my mother as a critical care nurse and my father in the back office as an HR exec. Dad_HR and Mom_RN both loved the place and what it does for the people of Detroit, but fled for greener shores as their careers allowed them more opportunities.

I used to work with an charmingly electric (she was a former lip model and sold fur coats on the side during the winter) woman who was shot by a crazy person while waiting in line at the ice cream truck when she was a teenager. She was treated at Sinai and has a scar that looks just like Frankie Myers' in the video, but on her arm - a little bumpy starfish.

As a teenager, I worked concessions at the Detroit Zoo. One of my colleagues was a bystander in a drive-by shooting and had been shot in the spine and was confined to a wheelchair. He was treated at Sinai Grace. He didn't like to talk about it. He didn't like to talk about much of anything.

Both my father and mother were glad they didn't work for Detroit Receiving - widely known as the most insane trauma center in Detroit. According to Mom_RN, the reputation might have come because it's a learning hospital and "all the doctors are teenagers".
