it's like having Adult Swim bumpers on the TV, at any time of day

(thanks, this is great)

I love these streams, and that a short loop of an anime students studying is the aesthetic nowadays.
Students looking out windows at the rain. Studying with headphones. Studying half-asleep. Seriously, someone just give me a supercut already. A really long, relaxing supercut, with each loop repeating for at least five minutes.

Another one I've been listening to a bit of is Noble Silence Radio. Not quite as mellow/chilled out as lofi, but still good.

One time I helped someone with their math homework in the lofi hip hop radio chat

oh ha. I totally though the main link was going to be this one just based on the link text, so there's another one.

That Polygon article was so bizarre...as noted in the comments, the subject of the article was neither the first nor the most popular lofi hip hop, having a small fraction of ChilledCow’s audience.

I wonder which medium (YouTube, Spotify, streaming radio, etc) is best or most likely least worst for compensating the artists.

Yasss. I wrote most of my thesis to lofi hiphop. It’s also great to have playing in the background when you have guests over.

This is one of my favorite genres! I'm glad to see it on Metafilter so other people can discover it. Thanks for sharing!

at some point, I'm going to have get my personal history of so-called Trip-Hop sorted out, because that's what a lot of this stuff reminds me of. I guess. Those weren't my straightest years

I've only ever seen the one with Shizuku from Whisper of the Heart (I think?) which phooky linked above. It usually pops up in trending when I'm logged out in incognito mode, and I'd always assumed that it was thus probably the most popular one. Surprising to me that the subscription gap between it and the actual most popular one is so large, since I've never seen the other one promoted! Sometimes I like to open both the Shizuku one and a looping rain sounds video up in the background while I do chores.

Speaking of Polygon

I was waiting for this. Nothing helps you study like the occasional shrill 'WAAAHHH!'. Stops you dozing off.

Hell yeah Chillhop Study Beats! Love that playlist / station on Spotify.

For other great stuff in a similar vein, check out lo-fi hi hop beats, lush lofi, jazz vibes, and stuff from artists like Louie Zong and In Love With a Ghost.

I've been listening to this channel, which is probably equal in quality to all the others, but features a short looping animation of an anime girl laid back gaming in her spaceship, which is what my daughter has told me her dearest ambition for the future is.

My favorite moments in this genre is when they decide to add a bossa nova beat and record new noodle instrumental bits over the top, reinventing easy listening music from first principles.

I'm wondering if there's a dingus that lets me play these as .pls files. Anyone know?

Fake audio patina on top of drums processed to sound like they came from a cassette tape all so they can sound like music from 35 years ago that was itself trying to recreate funk music without having a band - Baudrillardian simulacra music. Perfect for the era when we have better news reporting from the pretend comedy news programs than from actual journalists and a reality TV star who used to pretend to be a real estate mogul so he could be on TV now pretending to be President so people will read his tweets.

Which isn't to say I don't enjoy it.

I can't help you to that point specifically, but I would point out that chillhop (the raccoon one) has a bandcamp and that the compilations on there (anything on the page with "essentials" or "essenchills" in the title) tend to be name-your-price with no minimum.

ProleteR has a new album (name your price, no minimum) which may appeal to people who dig the chillhop kind of vibe.
