The World Cup’s Mysterious Path to Russia

NYT's podcast "The Daily" from June 22 [~25m]: The 2018 World Cup is now underway in Russia. The story of how it ended up there involves some names you might recognize: James Comey, Robert Mueller and Christopher Steele. Guest: Ken Bensinger, author of the forthcoming book “Red Card: How the U.S. Blew the Whistle on the World’s Biggest Sports Scandal.”

Listening to this left me with my jaw hanging by the end of it. It's like one of those real life podcast mystery series where the twists keep coming, only it's less than a half-hour long.

What is said about Russian football in 2010 is just wrong. It was in good health, the national team had played excellently at the 2008 European Championships, had been quite unlucky not to reach the World Cup in 2010 and would go on to have a respectable Euro 2012.

When listening to a story that hinges on details, it’s uncomfortable when details about a subject you know a lot about are incorrect.
