The NYT article in the midst of an absolutely goddamn heart wrenching read deadnames Rachel Humphreys. Insult to injury indeed.

nikaspark, that struck me as unusually insensitive as well. I'm going to email them about it.

Thank you. I hope they correct it. If they do I’ll flag my comment for deletion.
The more I learn about what happened in that time the more rage filled angry I get about it.
We can never forget. And never let people forget.

The way the city runs Hart Island just seems needlessly cruel. It would be sad enough to find out a loved one is buried there, but the strict limitations on visitation, prohibition on photos, etc., and minimal to nonexistent record keeping make it many times worse.

“I said, ‘Do you think the other dead people will catch it from them?’ and they said, ‘Well, we didn’t know what to do.’”

I lived through it. Imagine my rage. I'm still angry.

God thats so fucked. How do we erect a monument that honors these people and allows loved ones a dignified place to grieve?

I've heard of this island before.
Far and away the saddest part, for me, is that small child buried there. A child simply called "Baby 1". Why did no one want to bury him (or her) somewhere they could visit? Why do they not have a name? Did the child's mother and father also both succumb?
These things make me want to hug my kid...
