Emmy Nominations 2018

The nominations have been announced for the 70th Emmy Awards.

I'm not here to talk about anything else besides the fact that Megan Amram got two Emmy Nominations: Outstanding Short Form Comedy or Drama Series and Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series for her short form series, An Emmy For Megan. Which means it worked. (previously) In the words of her fellow The Good Place writer Jen Statsky, "this is the dumbest shit that's ever happened"

Also I love checking out the below-the-fold categories and finding shows I like that has no chance for the major ones. Like Blindspot up for stunt work, The Tick up for original main title theme music (also The Defenders, but I can't even remember theirs). And 4 out of 5 nominations for variety talk show are The Daily Show itself and its graduates, John Oliver, Stephen Colbert, and Samantha Bee.

Another great little nugget is that Sterling K. Brown is up for a lead actor in a drama (This Is Us) and also guest actor in a comedy (Brooklyn Nine Nine)

Megan Amram's Twitter is usually pretty good.

If The Americans doesn't sweep every category it's nominated in I'll be throwing a riot.

I'm glad to see The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel get the recognition it deserves.

And I kind of feel like Kyle MacLachlan was robbed for Twin Peaks. STARRING KYLE MACLACHLAN. Come on.

And I kind of feel like Kyle MacLachlan was robbed for Twin Peaks.

The problem is that there's no genre category adequate to describe Twin Peaks. He would have to be nominated for "Best Actor in a Twin Peaks Season."

Just give him one of the really big Emmys they use for decoration.

Guys, what are the chances that Megan can cut the series together into a feature film and get some kind of Oscar nomination?

Yay for Megan Amram, but boo for overlooking Jodie Comer. She was fantastic in Killing Eve.

Uh-oh, Teen Titans Go! got nominated, which completely invalidates one of their episodes.

I literally just looked up the rules and any short form of any type of film for an Oscar is 40 minutes or less so she can definitely qualify.

The disappointment I felt when Jon Stewart took a powder is replaced by delight that there are now four Emmy-worthy shows where only The Daily Show once stood.

like, she can do a voice replace of all the words in the show to change "Emmy" to "Oscar" and "television"/"TV" for "movie" and it could friggin' work.

Am I alone in thinking The Good Place is underrepresented here? The actress who plays Janet should be up for something, IMO.

There's no rules about it being screened at a festival or X number of screens or anything?

Manny Jacinto's work on that show is also highly underrated.

It's nice to see Jesse Plemmons, aka Fat Damon, getting a nod.

"Yay for Megan Amram, but boo for overlooking Jodie Comer. She was fantastic in Killing Eve."

I agree and I'm hard-pressed to choose between Oh and Comer. I think both deserve nominations.

On the bright side, Phoebe Waller-Bridge was nominated for writing for the premiere episode, so I'm happy with that. However, the writers of The Americans finale, Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg, were also nominated. Two of the six nominated episodes in the drama writing category I've not seen, and both I suspect were quite good; but of the other four I think I'd go with The Americans, although I actually think at least one other episode of Killing Eve is more deserving.

Often, the particular episodes used for nomination seem poorly- chosen to me, but when the people involved have to pick them for submission, I think they take a lot of esoteric factors into account.

So I was following Megan Amram's nomination struggles, and basically you have to get people who are in the industry to log on to the Emmy website and put your show/name into their system. What I'm wondering might have happened is that industry people might just not vote for a show because they think other people are already doing so and thus write in things that have less of a chance. This is pure speculation as to why The Good Place didn't get nominated, but Ted Danson and Maya Rudolph got acting noms. If anyone knows more about the process please correct me!

Pamela Adlon gets a nod. Good on her. Better Things is woefully underrated.

So I guess nobody watches The Expanse? Also Tatiana MAslany from Orphan black should get multiple emmys in the same category.

I've just finished binge watching Patrick Melrose and was torn to shreds by Cumberbatch. What a performance. I'm still processing the whole thing a couple of days later.

Every single actor on The Good Place got robbed besides Ted Danson, and even Ted Danson got robbed because he should have gotten two Emmy nominations for playing Michael because he's just that forking awesome. All of them are exceptional in roles that could have been all over the map. The Emmys need to add a Best Ensemble award to both the comedy and drama categories stat.

Two Things.
First, the list of characters behind Tatiana Maslany's nomination is no fucking joke, but it becomes hilarious:
Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series
The Americans • FX Networks • Fox 21 Television Studios and FX Productions
Keri Russell as Elizabeth Jennings
The Crown • Netflix • Left Bank Pictures in association with Sony Pictures Television
Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II
The Handmaid's Tale • Hulu • MGM, Hulu, The Littlefield Company, White Oak Pictures, Daniel Wilson Productions
Elisabeth Moss as Offred / June Osborne
Killing Eve • BBC America • Sid Gentle Films Ltd.
Sandra Oh as Eve Polastri
Orphan Black • BBC America • Temple Street in association with BBC America and Bell Media’s SPACE
Tatiana Maslany as Sarah Manning, Helena, Alison Hendrix, Cosima Niehaus, Rachel Duncan, Krystal Goderitch, Elizabeth (Beth) Childs, Jennifer Fitzsimmons, Katja Obinger, Tony Sawicki, Veera Suominen (M.K.), Camilla Torres and Unnamed Clone
Westworld • HBO • HBO Entertainment in association with Kilter Films, Bad Robot, Warner Bros. Television
Evan Rachel Wood as Dolores

Second, you should all see the joyous meltdown of our generation's Fred Rogers, Jonathan Van Ness, at the news of all noms for both queer eye and gay of thrones. ( Also contains hattenated Antoni, and a splendid Tan. )

Anthony Bourdain and his show Parts Unknown were nominated for nine Emmys.

Atlanta should have been nominated for Outstanding Drama instead of Comedy. I liked the second season more than the first, but it was a lot less funny. Two shows that run an hour are in the Comedy category, then a half-hour show can be with the Dramas.

Jesse Plemmons, aka

"Meth Damon" is my favorite. Wonderfully creepy in U.S.S. Callister too.

I bet if they named all of Elizabeth Jennings' aliases, the list would come close to equalling Tatiana's. (Not that I don't think that Tatiana didn't do a brilliant job--she absolutely did.--but she already won an Emmy for Orphan Black, so I think it's Keri's turn this year.)

"The Good Place" and "Killing Eve" are flat-out brilliant. I'd argue that both shows and all the main actors in both series are Emmy-worthy.

The jokes here calling Jesse Plemons fat and implying he looks like a meth user are baffling and shitty.

The difference is that Tatiana Maslany is actually playing 13 different characters, while Keri Russell is playing a character who goes undercover as other people. Those are two very different things. (Not saying that Keri Russell isn't great - she is! But there's a difference between the two.) Maslany also plays many of those characters going undercover, so you have Alison-as-Cosima, Sarah-as-Rachel, Sarah-as-Beth, etc. etc. etc. It's like a crazy Russian nesting doll of characterization. If you added those to the list, you'd probably match the number of Elizabeth Jennings' aliases.

psuedonymph, nobody's calling Jesse Plemons a meth user. They're calling him a meth cook.

I had a surprising meltdown at Seth McFarlane getting TWO nominations in the same category.

I didn't realize this year was so barren in the voice acting world.
posted by politikitty at 11:11 AM on July 13, 2018

it is not, but the industry has their heads up their own ass and seth is still influential enough to garner votes

Sorry, a sarcasm tag was definitely warranted. It would have been easy enough to throw it to the entire cast of Bob's Burgers and Adventure Time, and even that is staying pretty mainstream as far as voice actors.
