Pistachio is good, but not as good as brown.

I can't have ice cream much anymore (among other faves like pasta), per doctor's orders, in order to stave off the big D. But I'm sure that once in a while, a small scoop of Ben and Jerry's Ameri-cone Dream won't hurt. Or a small butter pecan cone from Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory (all right, it's big. A big cone. They don't serve small cones). Or a cup of vanilla from Amorino...

::sigh:: Suddenly I really miss Serendipity III, and I haven't been there in 15 years.

We went to The Fountain On Locust to celebrate Chocolate Day recently, and it's the perfect place to go back to for Ice Cream Day.

(And yeah, I'm diabetic, but. Sometimes.)

The best ice cream in the world (fight me!) is of course Ben and Jerry’s Cherry Garcia. And just in time for my body’s complete rejection of all things cow juice, it comes in Dairy free!!!!

Wow, Butter Pecan represent! I had no idea that anybody besides me and the elderly liked it.

I LOVE Butter Pecan ice cream! The recipe matters, of course, but when it's right, it is so right that basically no other ice cream should ever be made at all!

(also Maple Pecan, now that I think about it. Doesn't B&J make a Maple Pecan? Basically I grew up in southern NM were pecans and green chile are in everything and anything that can really match with and enhance pecans is something I love. Even green chile pecan brittle!)

I honestly have never had butter pecan and don't even know what it is. But then again, mint chocolate chip is my favorite and I'm not even a wealthy middle aged white woman in a domestic partnership so what do I know?

One thing I miss about living in a city is cardamom ice cream. There's none to be found in my area. Ah well.

But I loves me some dookie cough on a hot summer day. Nom nom nom.

About a dozen years ago, Stewart’s (upstate NY & New England) had a Key Lime Pie flavor that I could not stop at a single serving. If that had not been a limited run I would probably weigh twice what I do.

First coffee, then beer, and now ice cream is starting to blossom as a growing local craft food movement.

I might be projecting/imagining/hoping this, but I've been noticing more small local ice cream makers popping up, with wonderful flavors.

I'll give you that Ben & Jerry's is the best ice cream you can get from your supermarket, but I'd recommend everyone go and seek out your local ice cream makers, and give them a try. Then tell your friends. Then tell your friends to tell their friends.

That Atlas Obscura link is great, but it's anything but comprehensive. Here's a list of Ontario craft ice cream makers, I imagine with a little sleuthing, you can find ice cream local to you as well.

I'm about to go to one of those linked above and buy 4 small containers for a party I'm going to tonight; I imagine it'll go over well.

Pfft, I'mma MAKE ice cream tonight. Well - sherbet. But still.

....I got the Ben and Jerry's cookbook in a B&J scoop-shop-sponsored contest they had in 1992; it was right before I graduated from college, and after graduation I bought an ice cream maker so I could actually use it. I still have the ice cream maker; I also have David Liebowitz's The Perfect Scoop and the Ample Hills Creamery book.

I also have some of those super-thin Oreos, with mint in the creme, and I just need to get peppermint extract in order to make Doublemint Oreo Cookie. But I need to do the sherbet first - it's a sour cherry sherbet that spikes the sugar syrup with lemon verbena (and I have a lemon verbena plant that's going a little nuts, along with the sour cherries from last week's CSA I need to use up). Then maybe David Liebowitz's chocolate-raspberry will come before the peppermint (super-intense chocolate ice cream pureed with whole raspberries before you churn it).

But definitely making the mint. I like really strong mint ice cream - stronger than most people seem to like it. For a while I joked to people that if they ever made an Altoids flavor ice cream that would be about what I was looking for. Then once I made a mistake while making a batch of mint ice cream and accidentally put in one TABLESPOON of mint extract instead of one TEASPOON. ....So I ended up accidentally MAKING Altoids ice cream. And yep....it was about what I was looking for.

Not one mention of coffee ice cream? At the rate it disappears from store shelves around here, I thought it would be number three, if not number two.

Geez. It must be a Time Warp or something.

I was just considering whether to make a post about spaghettieis (i.e. spaghetti ice cream), a German ice cream dish made to look like a spaghetti dish (short entry on Wikipedia) -- I learned about it while looking something up for the last MeFi Podcast episode and mentioned it in that thread. Then I remembered that this thread was still open, so... consider the above an international tangent.

Coffee ice cream is usually good. I still really like French vanilla, and it's great for root beer floats. I also like pistachio and peppermint, but I don't usually see them in the grocery store.

Graeter's peach ice cream with a little raspberry sauce is my jam, but I haven't been able to find peach yet this summer. Black raspberry chip will have to suffice.
