“Outside of Posadism there was Peter Kolosimo, an Italian born anti-fascist partisan and early proponent of the “ancient astronaut” theory that alien visitors kickstarted civilization. After the war, he was kicked out of the Communist Party for his unorthodox views — not because of the alien stuff, but for his support of Tito’s anti-Stalinist Yugoslavian socialism. As a freelancer, he began to dabble in the occult and paranormal. His 1965 work, Not of this Earth, which argued that aliens had influenced — or created — early human civilizations, became a bestseller in Italy.“ THE SECRET HISTORY OF MARXIST ALIEN HUNTERS (The Outline)

"Though Ufologists tend to possess an anti-authoritarian streak..."

Not really. There's a lot of overlap between the alt-right, the conspiracy theorists, and the UFO people. They're against *the wrong kind* of authority i.e., one aimed at them. The racism is pretty obvious too, if one stops to think about what the Ancient Astronaut theory builds upon, the thought that Egyptians and Mayans and Sumerians couldn't possibly have done all this stuff themselves.

There's a smidge of lefty thought through some of the millenarian-messages-from-the-visitors with promises of world government and non-Christian theology but that reached its peak in the early Sixties and got quite weird and dangerous -- Heaven's Gate comes to mind -- since then.

If there are benevolent communist aliens trying to communicate with us, I assume they'd just get a Twitter account rather than skulking around in UFOs.
