Trevor Noah spends about 8 minutes explaining exactly why Nelson Mandela's birthday is still observed in such a major way in his home country of South Africa, and also around the world.

That was interesting. And I can't believe I've never seen a clip of a young Mandela before.

My friend sent me this video and now it's on Metafilter so it makes me feel like it's so good and I'm annoyed I can't watch it because it's region blocked.

I managed to watch this here: on their twitter.

Wow; I have realised how uneducated I am about Mandela. I had him pigeonholed as a South African MLK, and while there are similarities wow are there differences!

Thanks for the inspiration to learn more!

The contrast between the western actors and his own Mandela accent cannot be more stark. I was watching earlier along with his response to the French ambassador objecting to his joke about their football team, which I feel is of a piece.

I think Trevor Noah has some of his best moments during the Between the Scenes segments. It's not that he's unguarded (he's totally aware that he's on stage, talking to an audience), but he's totally comfortable and interested in talking to the audience.

Trevor Noah's impersonation game is top notch.

This is one of my favorite Trevor Noah bits on Nelson Mandela--when Mandela met Senator Barack Obama. I can only find a Facebook link for it, sorry.

Especially if you like the Between the Scenes segments, you should check out the audiobook version of his autobiography, which Trevor Noah reads himself.

It's a gem, and basically feels like an 11 hour session of having your funniest, most delightful, most insightful friend tell you stories about his childhood.

I really liked this; it was so well done. But... it made me even more confused as to why Trevor Noah called Antifa "vegan ISIS" less than a year ago.

When I was a college student, Nelson Mandela was the greatest living human being. Look what we've come to. I'm glad Noah is reminding us what we can be.

That was a clearly a joke. I'm not sure I'd put much stock in Townhall.com's slant ("Townhall: Conservative news, politics, opinion, breaking news analysis, political cartoons and commentary") on a segment wherein Noah is trying to point out that the right seizes upon every instance of leftist violence, whether justified or not. I'm not saying I agree with his assessment (not punching Nazis isn't going to make Hannity stop whatabouting) but I can understand the thought process behind it. And certainly, dumbasses breaking windows for no good reason aren't helping anyone.
