The chat app you can only use when you have less than 5% battery. The app itself is an art project that reflects on how dependent we are on our phones. But people have actually been using it. On average, 17 people are in the chatroom at once.

My phone is currently at 9%. Here’s hoping that just downloading the app will burn off 4%.

I get twitchy when my phone goes below 50%, I doubt that I let it go below 15% more than once or twice a year.

I love this concept. We need more apps and technology that create opportunities for people, with their full consent and without their data being tracked, to experiment with the emotions and revelations that arise from knowing we’re engaging with something that is fleeting and impermanent and potholed with questions left unanswered.

And of course to also make us realize how attached we are to our damn phones.

According to Dries, Apple is no longer allowing them to update their app.

OK, so, I have my suspicions for why this is. Maybe there’s a more innocuous reason than what I assume. If not a dichotomous explanation that includes Apple’s self-serving narrative vs. a less angelic motivation they’d prefer we not know.

I downloaded the app and then I realized my phone usually dies at 6% these days...

It's because Apple are huge fucking liars about their batteries.

I was hoping that if a person's phone battery had gotten that low that there would be an initial question asking if you were in trouble or needed help.

My phone exists in an unusual either-or state where once the battery power hits 15% it seemingly randomly either switches to power saving as per settings or immediately shuts down completely and claims 0% on charging. Any time I dip below 20% I have to ask myself "Do I feel lucky?"

Merely by existing this app frustrates me a little more. For extra irony, I don't even have much to say realtime anyway, I'm a classic chatroom lurker. Why do I care? Whhhyyyyy?!

I tried this a while back. People talk about nothing, their battery, general trolling, or dont talk at all. It is really agrivating and boring. It is people waiting in line for their battery to die.

I wish there were a chat app which was specifically designed to make sure you got a last message out at 1%.

I dunno how many times I've hit send on a text message and watched the phone turn off.
