“It’s a parody of difficulty sliders in games,”

It’s a remake of DOOM in Unity, called 1337d00m. Dario Zubovic, who has released it for free on itch.io, calls it a “hacker’s version of the original DOOM”. [via: Kotaku]
Oh man, what's old is new. Something like this was being done e.g. for Quake as far back as 1998 or so (see AA Lib, a library that renders 3D graphics as ascii-art, which was plugged into a lot of random stuff just because).
I remember blowing minds by bringing up lo-fi ascii Quake in a terminal at my college's computer lab.
(granted, this remake does have the added bit where harder difficulty means lower "resolution")

I wonder how trippy this would be if you did it with Doom VR? A virtual reality ascii would probably make my eyeballs bleed but just the thought of it is interesting to me.

At the MacHack '98 conference, the hack contest was won by AsciiMac, a system extension that did this to your whole screen, whatever programs you were running. Sadly, it doesn't work on modern Macs.

I was SO into this game as a kid. Need to set aside a chunk of time to see how the rebooted version plays as an adult.

Doom 2016 plays rather differently from original Doom but in a way that absolutely honors and complements its origins.

What's Unity in this context? I'm confused.

Yeah, seconded. It has more of a back story but has many familiar elements like being set on a base on Mars, seeing progressively more demonic creatures as you go, etc. The creatures are almost all updated versions of the familiar ones from the original, with a few twists.
Overall very fun, engaging gameplay. The music is awesome, too.

Just played the new Doom on PS4. It's fantastic even with a console controller. Silky, silky 60FPS too.

I haven't played new Doom, but I will say my only complaint as a non-player is their decision to name it Doom (not Doom [whatever the next number] or Doom 2016 or whatever). This has confused me greatly.
e.g.:
"Doom is now available on the Switch!" --> uh ... I mean, Doom plays on like, a watch, so why is this news?
