If Gaines had written nothing other than The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, that would be enough to place him on a high plateau. He's firmly placed in the Deep South. Wiley Cash, on the other hand, is an up-and-coming youngish writer from Asheville NC, firmly placed in the Appalachian literary tradition, who became a student of Gaines' and eventually a friend. The story of their friendship is heartwarming.

My introduction to Gaines was A Lesson Before Dying. Back then, my best sources for finding books were the mimeographed book lists sent out by the used and rare book dealers from whom I purchased first editions. It's funny to look back just a few years and ponder the changes in how we marketed and purchased books.

Thanks for this. I've joined his book club and will be purchasing the first book shortly.
