Hilary Woods' Colt - mysterious, dark and beautiful, pulling you in

Hilary Woods carries a range of influences into her music, from her education in dance, to growing up surrounded by music -- her father was a pianist, and in her house there was "a huge mix of folk music and Irish ballads very heavy metal." You can hear all these influences on her debut album, Colt (Bandcamp) Although it is lithe and warm, there is an austerity to its texture that harkens back to the forbidding tones of heavier music. (FACT Rated interview + review). If Grouper’s stark, intense minimalism (Bandcamp) is best visualized as the darkest corner of the coldest house, then Colt ... is the desolate, cinematic landscape outside it (London in Stereo). posted by filthy light thief (5 comments total) 19 users marked this as a favorite

Extra bonus: another mysterious, dark and beautiful new album with similar tones but more percussive and synth-supported is Tess Roby's Beacon, though she and her label, Italians Do It Better, don't have as much audio to sample online. Roby was also interviewed in another FACT Rated piece

In fact, I've been listening to the two albums, back-to-back, on and off for the last couple of days, and the last track of Beacon flows into Colt beautifully. Short samples of Beacon from Amazon, or full stream with Amazon Prime; 2 minute long samples from Bleep.com.

Boy, that "Colt" is an instant winner. Thanks so much for posting this. Gonna try Grouper next.

Great post as always! As an aside, Sacred Bones, the label that released Colt, is almost always worth taking note of.
